Other than maybe the Mario NES/SNES platformers, Mega Man is the best side-scrolling series of all time, IMHO. I'd still put Sonic above Mega Man, but those are definitely the top three. Donkey Kong's got a pretty good claim to it too.

Mario/DKC/Sonic are still my top three, though I'll give credit to Classic Mega Man for never really having any sort of low point, with only the cheap difficulty of Mega Man & Bass, the generic nature of 4/5, and the lousy voice acting of 8 being the only real weak spots.

(Meant to reply earlier but realized I’d moved onto other things & forgot to do so. 😁) Oh, no disrespect at all to Sonic or DKC, and if I were doing a more objective analysis, I might give either or both the edge. But for me, I’ve probably spent far more time with the Mega Man series, and am still more apt to hit up either Mega Man or Mario when I’m in a retro gaming mood. So for my own personal enjoyment, I have to rank Mario and Megs as my top 2.

I was introduced with Mega Man II. I don't think I played the original until much later.

Amazing series. Only beat a couple ones but I love it so much. Mega Man III is easily my favorite of the series. Legends was amazing and I'm still sore we never got 3.

I'll always be a 2D Mega Man fan. As far as action platformers go, Mega Man and Castlevania are my jams.
Really wish Cacpcom made another Mega Man ZX game. I loved switching around the Biometal powers of the first game and Model A's "literally copy the bosses you've fought" ability from ZX Advent. And getting new powers also opened up the Metroidvania-style design of the levels.
