First game came out all the way back on December 17th, 1987.
I should really try and play more of the series myself. I think the only one of the games I've ever actually finished is the first one and I really haven't even actually dipped my toe into most of them.

Funnily enough I think my favorite of the original NES titles might actually be 6. Great use of color for levels, cool stage gimmicks, and they finally figured out a difficulty balance that didn't feel unfair. In all honesty it feels like a graphical update away from being an SNES Mega Man title.

I'm awful at all the NES games in the series, but man those are fun to play. Outstanding music, too!

It was odd that 6 was released at the very end of The NES lifespan, instead of being made for The Super Nintendo.
And I wonder how many knew that Protoman is in the game?

Capcom seemed big on taking advantage of the install base of numerous big consoles, regardless if they were current gen or not. Releasing Mega Man X3 and Megaman & Bass so late in the SNES' lifespan is something that only makes sense if they genuinely thought there was still market for both.

Mega Man X (SNES), Mega Man 6 (NES), and Mega Man IV (Game Boy) all came out in the same 3-4 month period. Capcom was hitting everything it could at that time.
What I liked about both Mega Man 5 and 6 is that a few of the levels had parallax scrolling for backgrounds. That's something that only existed in a handful of NES games while being something way more standard in SNES games.

Definitely my favorite game series of all time. Have played through the original NES games so much that I have actually tried my hands at playing hacks in the last weeks (to get something new out of the sprites and graphics I love).
My personal Top 3 are 3, 2 + 11.
3 because it really felt like the last one on the NES to actually do something different that has not been done in the next games (the Doc Man robot stages are awesome and I love the idea that you have to battle the "ghosts" of the Mega Man 2 robot masters again). Love the introduction of Rush, it has the best control scheme for Rush Jet and it also features a final boss fight against Wily that is not THAT GODDAMN DISAPPEARING/REAPPEARING SAUCER ROUTINE!
2 only checks in a little bit below 3. What's more to say? Great music, great levels, good choices with the addition of E-Tanks and passwords. Perhaps they could have made the Metal Blade a tad less overpowered but its OK.
11 because that is in my opinion the correct way to do a modern Mega Man game. Good graphics, a great new feature with the Gear system, it really feels like an old-school Mega Man game with a fresh coat of paint on it. And hey, at least the final boss fight was a bit different.

I wish I could get a simple timeline of the release dates of every Mega Man game. I was a big fan of Mega Man as a kid, and I still have a lot of love for the games overall, but I swear from like 2002 or 2003 or so until 2008 or so, it legit felt like we were getting a Mega Man game every couple months, in this subseries or that subseries, or a port of this and a port of that, or splitting this game up into two versions like it's f***ing Pokemon despite it making no sense, for years on end. It was egregious. I got so sick of it that even though Mega Man has basically been dead for over a decade with almost no real new releases, mostly just ports and collections, I still don't feel even the faintest desire for a new entry.

Also a rare instance of a series that never attempted to do a 3D entry like Mario, Zelda, Castlevania, Metroid etc. did (yes, there was Mega Man Legends but that is more of a separate series and not a part of the original series timeline).

There was Mega Man X7. And it was so bad that Capcom went to 2.5D for X8.

I thought about mentioning Mega Man X7 but thought against it, since it does still contain quite a bit of 2D sections and is not as fully 3D as Super Mario 64 or Ocarina Of Time for example were (which had no 2D sections).

Other than maybe the Mario NES/SNES platformers, Mega Man is the best side-scrolling series of all time, IMHO.

I remembered seeing one in a old GameNOW magazine years ago. A new mega man game was almost a yearly thing until Keiji Inafune left capcom.

Mega Man was so much fun when I was a kid. I played the hell out 3. I like the series, but 3 is easily where I became a fan. Yeah, the first couple games were pretty good, but once they introduced that slide, it opened up so much gaming potential. Spark Man's stage was probably my favorite, especially since those little eye robots looked like they were dancing to the music. 4 is also very very good.
