Paul Romaā¦.was āthe job guyā for years and years in the WWF, and then paired alongside a bunch of main event stars whoāve carried the rival promotion for a long time. To go from curtain jerking to standing alongside elite talent always made him stick out like a turd in a pristine swimming pool He had at least Power & Glory as a bridge but even so had been gone from a major promotion for close to two years. I personally thought he didn't fit on the PPV cards even as Power & Glory. A lot of fans look back fondly on he and Herc as they worked really well together but after years of jobbing I thought it was too good for him. Herc had been losing for a while but mostly to Quake so the jobber stink wasn't totally on him, he could have turned heel himself though probably would have gotten lost in the shuffle. With Roma, he wasn't a guy that was gone almost 2 years that fans would be clamoring for, having missed him. Those nearly 2 years were an eternity back then when he had been on TV. Also WCW and WWF fans then were territorial. This wasn't the Monday Night Wars era where we watched both. Some watched both in 1993, sure but still probably a lot of fans who didn't even known Roma because they didn't watch WWF.

Iāll never understand why Paul Roma kept getting looks. I guess that he was a decent looking guy but dude was a Jobber in the Young Stallions, even as a kid I wondered why Hercules was teaming with this loser, and then got even more confused when he was a Horseman and his team with Paul Orndorff was a head scratcher all the way around,
Basically I think that Paul Roma should have never escaped Jobber duty.

CM Punk as part of Raven's Flock, erm, Raven's Gathering, in TNA came either during or immediately after Punk and Raven had a year long blood feud in ROH. It was made weirder by Punk's character in TNA being "guy who spent his childhood idolizing Raven".
I know it's different companies and we're supposed ignore it, but I didn't even watch ROH and I was aware of the Punk vs Raven feud, so it was a pretty big deal at the time.

That's what I was going to come in and say. If there were a couple aesthetic vibes to the nWo in their first year-plus in WCW, they were "scummy crime gang mooks you run afoul of in a rock n' roll/whiskey bar and get into wild brawls with" or "cool, hip-hop influenced guys who could smack talk you and then back it up in a fight". Curt Hennig, absolute legend though he was...didn't really fit either vibe. Not to say every single nWo member had to fit either vibe, there was room for a guy like DiBiase who could be presented as the "money man" of the group or others who could come across as hired guns or something, but Hennig always felt off, even down to not changing his ring gear after joining.

Hennig was fine as part of a heel stable, but it worked best if it was in the Horsemen mold rather than the nWo. Heck even though he was presented himself as a Minnesota cowboy, he still fit better in the West Texas Rednecks than he did the New World Order and that's saying something.

Which gets to another issue with the NWO. Almost everybody they respected IRL ended up in the kayfabe stable. So instead of having a Hennig vs Hall program you ended up with Curt being just another guy in the NWO.

Remember that short period when Sable was hanging out with the Oddities? I donāt think she was technically a member, but having the attractive popular girl hanging around and dancing with circus freaks made no sense at all, not helped by the fact that she clearly didnāt want to be doing it.

Is Owen Hart in the Nation too obvious? Enough was enough, and it was time for a change.

Think that was just used to turn the group face and set up the short lived feud with Luna Vachon. Here's one I think could have worked were he still able to wrestle: Rick Rude in DX. Don't think he was THAT much older than Shawn and Hunter were at the time. Could he have still wrestled, he could have been to them what Billy Gunn is to The Acclaimed in AEW. As he was presented as serious suit guy though? Eh, didn't seem to fit (and DX even mocked him after that same night both shows situation by having Whippleman dress as Rude did before kicking Harvey's ass).

I can see why they would try with him as his work was pretty good and he was a good looking guy with a good physique although a bit on the short side. If anything he probably underachieved a bit. A lot of the problem with him was his attitude stunk which is likely why he never got higher then tag team pushes where he was playing sidekick to someone else (Hercules, Arn, Orndorff).

Remember when they tried to mitigate the uncomfortable racial undertones and so put Buzzkill in the No Limit Soldiers and Curly Bill in the West Texas Rednecks?
Because wow, Buzzkill didn't fit, for multiple reasons. Dude was a HIPPIE.

Because wow, Buzzkill didn't fit, for multiple reasons. Dude was a HIPPIE. Buzzkill came after the No Limit Soldiers. In the No Limit Soldiers he was still basically just Brad Armstrong but referred to as BA. Because when you think Brad Armstrong hip hop enthusiast is obviously the first thing that comes to mind. In between there was a brief period where he went back to generic Brad Armstrong in trunks and feuding with Berlyn and even going over on him on PPV for some reason.

The Horsemen had a lot of 4th guys who didn't really fit. Sid, Sting, Roma, Jarrett, Malenko.I'd argue Dean fit the horsemen quite well. The horsemen's original incarnation (Flair, Arn, Ole and Tully) were defined by being amazing technical wrestlers, and Dean fit that trope to a T. Yes he didn't have the swagger of a horseman, but neither did Benoit.
Agreed. Dean and he who shall not be named really fit the "no nonsense with older-uncle lack of style" roles that Ole and Arn had. If anyone fit oddly, it was Mongo, but he did have his own sense of swagger.

Randy Orton with the Wyatt Family
Even though it was a vehicle for a feud he never really switched his look or anything to match them or their ideals. However, as far as connection goes, him, Bray and Brodie had really good chemistry
