I was thinking about this the other day, we're actually in a pretty good era for sports as far as parity goes since 1999, we've seen a lot of first time teams win it all. Sure, there have been some dynasties as well, but there have also been a ton of teams snap a long drought. That said, this period has also crowned 4 new MLB teams, 6 new NFL teams, 5 new NBA teams, and 7 new NHL teams. That might not seem like a lot, but that essentially averages out to a new team winning every 4 years.
80% of MLB teams have won it all, 62 % of NFLteams, 60% of NBA teams and 69% of the teams in the NHL.
So out of all the championship-less teams left that haven't won, who do you wager will be the next one?
Will the Seattle Mariners ever win a World Series, let alone get to one?
Will the Buffalo Bills ever rectify losing 4 straight Super Bowls?
Will the Charlotte Hornets ever not only succeed in the playoffs, but actually win it all?
*included due to both moving cities and changing their team name, as there is nothing really linking them to their former glory

Barring any major catastrophes, the Bengals and Bills are both in really good position to be championship contenders for a long time.

I feel the NFL is the easiest league to "turn it around" and go from shit to great but it's also the hardest path to the title. You can literally do everything right and lose in the playoffs because a ball bounced left instead of right.
Because because of that I'm going with the NFL Team. The Vikings are historically one of the winningest franchises but because they have never won the Superbowl they are treated like jokes. Either the Bengals/Bills/Vikings wouldn't shock me.

of this list i'll go with the Bills. Great QB, solid defense, some offensive playmakers, and pretty good coaching. Wouldn't be surprised if they do it this year.

But yeah, of every team listed, it's most likely the Bills or Bengals at a longer #2. Sport by sport - Padres or Mariners, Suns or Clippers, Golden Knights or Preds

It's a nice testament to the NHL system that both of the newest expansion teams (Golden Knights and Kraken) are immediately competitive. Though they also benefit a lot from being in the Western Conference, too.

It's interesting that MLB, the only sport without a salary cap, is the sport with the highest parity.

It's interesting that MLB, the only sport without a salary cap, is the sport with the highest parity. In terms of who wins championships, maybe. But the cheaper teams outside of the Rays can only compete for so long before falling back into the basement because they refuse to spend for quality free agents or to keep homegrown talent that breaks out. Meanwhile the Yankees and Dodgers of the sport are always competitive even if they're not winning championships every year.

The Arizona Cardinals will never win a championship again until they relinquish the 1925 NFL Championship back to the fine folks of Pottsville, PA.

Padres. They’re not afraid to go all in, and one of these times it’s going to work!

Padres. They’re not afraid to go all in, and one of these times it’s going to work! No way. Those dorks that sang that corny-ass song before they met the Phils in the NLCS doomed them to never win anything.

Got to be the Bengals. Burrow has completely turned that franchise around and is going to be there for a long while.

While I want it to be the Sharks, the Bengals are right at the door. So long as it’s not against the 49ers, I’m down with it.

My Detroit Lions. I know you read that and immediately started laughing. I just feel they're at the start of something special. Brad Holmes, and Dan Campbell are the right guys at the right time, and you can actually feel the culture changing. The other NFL teams on this list while better, also have a lot of playoff baggage that in the NFL is just for some reason very hard to shake off. While the Lions have the bad history, they also have a clean slate that these other teams don't, and that's an advantage. Again laugh at this, I'll understand, but it just feels good to be optimistic as a Lions fan for a change.

Plus a lot of that parity was awhile ago; the 80s saw a different World Series winner every season, for example. It's interesting to think about what makes these things more or less possible in each league: -MLB: tougher to be consistently competitive in a league with no salary cap, so while the Padres have spent like crazy and could potentially win, it's unlikely they're going to spend like this forever. On the other hand, MLB's playoffs are among the most random and chaotic of all the big sports; the best team very often loses once you take a season based around 162 games and reduce it to a best of 3, 5, or 7. So yeah, tougher to make the playoffs, which reduces your odds (obviously) of a new first time winner, but arguably easier to win once you do qualify, so the odds become greater. -NFL: easier to get back into the thick of things since the NFL has parity rules and easier schedules for teams that struggle the previous year, and the "Any Given Sunday" principle does mean that upsets are not impossible...but the NFL is also prone to having dominant teams that routinely take out upstarts once the playoffs begin, whether that was New England's dynasty, Kansas City's current run, etc. Basically it's the opposite of baseball: it's easier to make the playoffs in the NFL, but it seems tougher to make a run if you're not a big favorite from the get-go. -NHL: lots of league parity means that almost every playoff matchup can be a coin toss on some level, it's a league where an #8 beating a #1 is far from unheard of and where even coming back from being down 3-1 or 3-0 in a series has happened more frequently than in others. However, the playoffs are a @#$%ing beast to get through; four rounds of best of sevens in a league with as much parity as the NHL means the teams that are lacking something very, very frequently get knocked off before they can win a "fluke" Cup or something. Like, there's lots of teams who ride a hot goaltender to a conference final or even Stanley Cup Final, but to win the whole thing you really need to be a complete squad. -NBA: upside is that if a major talent is available at the top of a draft in a given year, a shitty team can leap to being a contender overnight. Downside is that, like the NFL, the NBA is susceptible to having dominant teams that kind of control the top of the standings for awhile, so if you're not one of the top two seeds in the East or West your odds just don't feel great of making any kind of significant run. The #8 seed Knicks making a run to the Finals in 1999 only really happened because the Knicks were a much better team than that in '99, they just dealt with a stupid amount of injuries that season that kept their record low. Given all of that, I think I'm leaning towards the Rays in MLB or Cincy or Buffalo in the NFL - Rays are just a quality organization, and enough trips to the playoffs will most likely eventually lead to a title, again if simply due to how chaotic MLB's playoffs can be. Bengals and Bills have a major chance because they're in the upper echelons of the AFC, and if either can overcome Kansas City it means they're right on the precipice and just need to win one more game to finish the job, so just by sheer math they have better odds. Surprise choice for the NHL, though: Buffalo. That team's going to be very good soon.
