Going to NYC next month; need help

So I got my wife tickets for Phantom on Broadway for Christmas. We're spending about a week in NYC next month. We already have the show planned out. And we're also going to the Statue of Liberty.

What else should we do? I know about all the big time stuff, like the 9/11 memorial and what not, but I'm looking for other things. Also, any other tips, tricks or advice would be greatly appreciated.

If you want some authentic New York pizza, see if you can get a table at Lombardi’s in Little Italy in Manhattan. It’s world-famous, and thus a bit touristy, but totally worth it.

As for general advice: NYC in general isn’t really my cup of tea as a city, but one thing I will say is that as rough around they edges as they may occasionally be, the people are by and large super friendly, and also really helpful and knowledgeable, so if you need to ask for directions, you shouldn’t have much trouble getting help.

Whereabouts in the city are you staying, and what's everybody's patience for walking versus riding the train? Also stating the obvious, but do keep in mind that NYC does get northeastern winters, and January and February do tend to be a bit more potent.

Weather pending, I'd say the city is a lot more fun when you give yourself time to wander versus trying to cross off checkboxes. It's been 5ish years now since I lived in the city, but I can recommend decently enough depending on what all you all think you might want to do.

Alright, do you already have your Statue of Liberty tickets?

If not, get them now and get the ones where you can go up to the top of the crown.

If those aren't available, you can see the statue from the Staten Island Ferry, which is free. Otherwise, going to the Statue of Liberty with tickets is really a whole-day affair (it's fun, but there's a lot) and if you're going to do it, get your crown tickets for it so you can truly see everything.

I work around that area and as far as conveince goes, if you go around the corner they do have a tour bus that takes you around if you want to do that as well

Don't be afraid to ask for advice outside as far as directions go. If you have never been around the 42nd st area, I would def take the walk to sight see and just get a feel of it

Otherwise, yeah the City is at your exposure as far as anything you want to do. Statue of Liberty is a good attraction. 125th St in Harlem is historic place to visit even with as much as it has changed

Idk if I'd advertise this. It's pretty dangerous filled with drug addicts who can sometimes be aggressive. I'd stay away. I coach a high school baseball team and we have to get off the subway there to catch shuttle buses to Randall's Island nearby. So this isn't a gross exaggeration. It's not the safest spot in the city.

It has been many years since I was in the city but…

If you are going to be down at the 9/11 memorial, check out Battery Park (the southern tip of Manhattan) and Trinity Church (as seen in National Treasure).

I used do do the “Fifth Avenue Walk”.
Starting at the Empire State Building at 34th st you walk up Fifth Avenue.
You get the NY Public Library, Rockefeller Center, St Patrick’s Cathedral, Sak’s Fifth Avenue, Cartier, Tiffany’s, all the way up to Central Park.
And no matter how you feel about the owner, Trump Tower is an impressive building to walk through

Well, that is the East Side on 125th Street. It's one of the seediest locations in the city, bar none, even in broad daylight. I've seen some shit on 125th & Lex that doesn't need to be seen by human eyes.

As for as sightseeing, as a resident, I'd keep my itinerary very tight. NYC isn't nearly as safe as it once was.

ok but seriously, I'm not one much for plays/musicals and Broadway was still awesome. You are gonna love it.

There's a Singapore Food Court on 50th Street and 7th Avenue called Urban Hawker and a Korean Food Court on 32nd Street and 5th Avenue called Food Gallery 32. They're not cheap, but if you like Chinese/Asian food and are interested in trying something a little different they're great to check out.

For a cheap, low-key NYC adventure I'd recommend taking a trip on the Roosevelt Island Tramway. It's the same price as a ride on the subway but it will get crowded during rush hour.

Another cheap one is to just wander around Central Park. There's the more well-known stuff there like the Zoo or the Carousel, but there's also some lesser known cool stuff like Belvedere Castle and the Hallett Nature Sanctuary.

MacDougal Street and St. Marks Place are also great streets to hang out on, with a lot of fun stores and eateries.
