This. Ambrose if he had no affiliation with the Shield, Punk wins. If Ambrose ever came back, WWE would make them the #1 stable and re-write every single piece of wrestling stable history. I respect that none of the three seem interested in doing any more Shield stuff (at least for a long time) There was a very brief Shield reunion in 2015, with Mox and Reigns tagging for much of the year. There was another Shield reunion in 2017 and another one in 2018. The Shield stuff had been done to death by that point, and I cannot blame any of them for being sick of it. And to be honest, it would feel like a retrograde step if they did have a full reunion and put the SWAT gear back on, everybody wanted Reigns to get shot of that flak jacket for years.
Roman as the Tribal Chief, Rollins as the Visionary and Mox as the leader of the BCC feel so much fresher and more contemporary than they would back as The Shield.

Ambrose wasn't 1/10th of the superstar that Punk was, and I say that as someone who likes Ambrose and mostly dislikes Punk.

Jon Moxley feels like he's in the Cody Rhodes mold, where he left in frustration, went out on his own and became a bigger star than he was in WWE, so his return would mirror Cody's in that regard. He could be utilized as a long-term asset and star both as Jon Moxley the solo performer and as one of the founding members of The Shield.
CM Punk, meanwhile, would likely be a dead-cat bounce, car-crash sort of return, where people would be more interested in seeing how he'd burn this bridge rather than having him back in WWE. I think judging by the reactions his name alone gets at AEW shows, wrestling fans in general have just soured on him and have little to no interest in seeing this grumpy old man back, especially if he just waltzes into the main event.

What would Punk do besides show up and bitch? Bro: eat muffins. Buy all the ladies Starbucks gift cards. Recreate a shitload of Bret Hart matches while putting down Bill Goldberg. Put down the Miz. Put down the Miz some more. Cause an unrepairable rift throughout the roster that tanks morale and leads to his unceremonious exit while calling himself a martyr #justcmpunkthings

Punk for sure, especially after the whole AEW run ending (has it ended, actually? Is he coming back? Work, bro?) the way it did. I would be interested in how WWE played it. However, having said that, I think he should stay away from wrestling.

Punk returning would be up there with Bruno and Warrior returning, the "Yeah, not a chance" guys that did.
Mox, Mox seems inevitable. He's going to get older, slower, he's got a kid, got friends there, there is money to made and he's loved and respected.

Maybe for a Legends deal and a Hall of Fame induction. But he just signed a huge new deal with AEW this year and didn't even contact WWE as a negotiation tactic. And this was after Vince "retired" and Trips' new Era of Good Feelings started. And now with Renee working there too? Think he's firmly in that camp. Punk might show up sooner than Mox, which is really crazy to think about. But if (and that's a big if) he can let go of his grudge against Triple H, I could see him back.

I honestly believe mox will only return for a final shield feud or match at the end of his career ( ignoring the unlikely event that wwe works out a deal with aew for.some sort of shield special event)

Punk would be the bigger moment asking out on the stage, Moxley would end up being the much bigger return once their respective stories panned out.

Punk's exposed himself as enough of a PITA that he'd be worth a spiked TV rating or PLE buy rate, and that's it.
Ambrose would be a far better fit overall and would contribute more to the overall product.
That said, neither appear interested in returning to WWE and Mox says he's in a much better headspace in AEW, so perhaps the whole discussion is moot.

The initial ratings bump, mainstream coverage, and probably spike in merch sales would be all Punk....but then what? He tends to get injured, burn his bridges, or just be miserable and from many accounts toxic. And this part is subjective, but his in ring stuff isn't the greatest and he's not exactly getting better with age (though the dog collar match was one of my fave five this year)
I would argue that if you built it and booked it correctly, a Mox return could be *almost* as big as a Punk return. He would have to lay low for awhile and kinda go radio silent. We would need some hints from people who want to fight him or want him on their side. I would definitely approach it the way they did with Punks return (and they kinda did it with Cody's return)...never explicitly state who it is, but it should be assumed we all really know what's going on.
Then, give him whatever the hell he wants for his return. Clearly Cody wanted his gigantic elevator and pyro and shit. Let Mox roll out of a goddamn dumpster listening to wild thing, blading himself as he makes his way to the ring through the crowd.
Or whatever.
You're gonna get so much mileage out of him. I was amazed at how well he handled being the champ during lockdown and how he picked up the ball again once Punk f***ed off
Edit: and somehow I forgot the dude went to rehab in the middle of all this, got sober, came back looking 5-10 years younger and picked up right where he left off.
Anyway that's my monthly Mox gushing post. I don't think he's my favorite wrestler, but I have a lot of respect for him and what he's done for the this silly thing I enjoy watching every week. 🙃

Punk would be the biggest no doubt.
I’d rather Mox though just to reunite The Shield. The pop that would get to see those 3 guys in the ring together again would be magic. I think the perfect time to do Reigns v Mox might have gone but that match would still be huge.
