Cornette says they were straight up friends for decades until a few years back. Even if he wasn't trying to be a "source" you know Dave got some stuff out of a decades-long friend sometimes. I know Cornette stuff is run into the ground, but what was the real reason Cornette just dropped Dave as a friend? Kenny Omega. Dave said Cornette was out of touch for criticising him so harshly, and Cornette threw his toys out of the pram.

Kenny Omega. Dave said Cornette was out of touch for criticising him so harshly, and Cornette threw his toys out of the pram. Of all the dumbest reasons to end a 30+ year friendship with someone, it's about differing opinions of Kenny Omega's work. So stupid.
But one of them is Cornette, not exactly a man with the best temperament.

Wasn't Tom Zenk another one? *Bring-Bring* Hello, Dave Meltzer speaking. Hi, Dave! It's me, your old pal, the Z-Man! And, man, do I have a juicy scoop for you! Uh-huh. Jobbing again? Yea, yeah... But this time it's Rick Rude who's beating me! How cool is that?!?! Yes, uhrm, very, yaknow, cool and "interesting" indeed. That reminds me about World Class in 198... ... ... ... ... ... and anyway, yaknow, how'd you get my new, uhrm, unlisted number? I like Tom Zenk, btw.

He cut off all contact with Brian Zane because Zane liked something Corny didn’t care for.

Anyone who hasn't heard Zenk's appearances on the live Observer eYada show (in the era prior to podcasts), he was very amusing. Like, way more personality than he was ever allowed to show in any wrestling interviews or storylines. He was hilarious. By the time he was on the show he had left wrestling, so he didn't care anymore joked about everybody, etc. I don't think it was a case of Zenk not being able to show his personality, as much as he wasn't able to channel it in his on air character, much in the same vein as Dean Malenko. I think Zenk's biggest issue was buying a little too much into his own hype. Yeah, he was funny on the Observer show, but he also felt he was dealt a bad hand. That might have been true, if something or anything he did was memorable, which it wasn't. The thing I remember most about Zenk was getting accidentally frightened in WCW when the pyro went off.

According to Cornette, its not necessarily Omega himself, its that they aren't on the same page anymore when it comes to how they view wrestling. Also, Cornette complained that Meltzer kept sending him strange emails about weird and random topics.

But how much is Dave paying them? If I was a wrestler, why would I give info to this guy, even if I liked him? I think I’d be more in the camp of “you want to know what’s going to happen? Tune in and find out!” Not in a rude way of course, but there seems to be nothing gained (unless handsomely paid) by leaking company info to an outside party. Because you get to influence, if not outright control the narrative put out by the closest thing wrestling has to a legitimate news source. Look at two of his sources, Flair and Benoit, Flair was an is an absolute chore for WCW management, his party guy behaviour isn't a new development and he certainly wasn't the draw he was in the 80s NWA for most of his WCW run, but he got an undeserved reputation polish from Dave as every story about Flair got the Flair spin. Benoit, also a source, was an ass even before all the head trauma, a lockerroom bully of Bob Holly proportions, but that wasn't as widely discussed as it should have been, because Benoit talked about Benoit and he sure wasn't going to discuss the hazing he was a part of. With more modern talent, Dave can help get you on fans radar, so there's also a lot of gratitude there when they make the big time. It costs nothing to confirm it deny a story and never hurts to keep on good terms.

I'm not sure what to make of the second part, but that two men in their late fifties/early sixties ended a three decade friendship in part because of a difference of opinion about wrestling is sad in every sense of the word.

There's a bit in the Phil Donahue wrestling scandals special which confirms one of Meltzer's sources over the years.
(Paraphrased)
Donahue - When Hogan left you were devastated. Vince - I don't think I'd have said devastated. Meltzer - That's what you told me. Vince - Oh right! My bad!

Taylor, Terry Rooster, Red This. Taylor was one of the biggest Meltzer stooges EVER. It helped that Taylor was always in one of the big 2 companies throughout the entire 1990's, mostly in a backstage role. I've heard Bruce, Schiavone, Bischoff, JR and Cornette all mention it.

I always find the notion of Meltzer having inside source information on fake carny fighting for over 40 YEARS absolutely fascinating.

Yeah, in terms of his critical opinions I'm pretty ambivalent, but the amount of shit he gets for his reporting and his opinions is insane. He does get it wrong sometimes, and he often doesn't like stuff that people do and vice versa, but that's life, and doesn't justify the absolutely insane vitriol directed at him because he's sometimes wrong or "wrong" about wrestling. He’s said a few things that people have reasonable issue with that don’t have to do with getting things wrong though. Yeah, "Dave has a really virulent hatedom composed of people with weird grievances or poor understanding of what his role actually is/what he has actually said" and "sometimes Dave is an asshole and/or casually misogynistic" aren't mutually exclusive. I'm not saying I think he loathes women's wrestling or anything, like there's a reason Manami Toyota got a shitload of 5 star matches, among a couple of others, but he doesn't pay as much attention to women's wrestling, by and large, and he has relatively few sources within it, seemingly. It does sometimes rub people the wrong way. On the topic of asshole behavior, I mostly think of him taking a bunch of cheapshots at DDP in the past, like calling him "Leatherface" and being dismissive of him in the '90s. It does feel like Dave has been less of a dick in recent years, but I do know shots like that, "The Junkfood Dog", etc, didn't endear him to a number of people.
