This is pretty unprecedented for a cartoon series. Closest I can think of is with anime dubs. They did recast Alphonse's English VA for FMA Brotherhood (while bringing back most of the original English VA's) because the actor from the original dub grew out of the part.
Though if they ever do another FMA dub, they're almost certainly going to recast Edward from Vic Lasagna for similar reasons to Roiland.

Continuing to make the show is pure capitalism
And Roiland will still make money from it even when he isn't working on it
It will be a terrible season of the show and the abuser will be paid anyway, so everybody wins

Is Rick and Morty the first mainstream cartoon to have to recast its most important characters? Closest situation I can think of is Ren and Stimpy but that at least kept Billy West through both the John K and Games Animation eras. Pokemon changed dubbing studios and thus all the voice actors, right? That's anime, sure, but it's also pretty mainstream even among non-anime fans.

It'd be gratifying if it was like when 7th Heaven was taken off of syndication to spite Stephen Collins, yeah, but like with that, it also screwed over a bunch of people who hadn't done anything wrong themselves.

Dave Coulier replaced Lorenzo Music in The Real Ghostbusters. John Kassir replaced Charlie Adler in Tiny Toon Adventures.

Yeah that's all completely fair It is just depressing how many guys like Roiland have already had too much power for too long to actually suffer any meaningful consequences I do not envy the VAs who come in to replace him

I wonder what choice he'll pick to go forward in the 2020's scumbag choose your own adventure. Will he start claiming to have found religion? Will he claim to be persecuted for political reasons? Will he make cryptic tweets about the matrix or will he go to Netflix on a deal worth tens of millions while railing about cancel culture?

It's the thing that people can easily forget about these things especially considering a good, consistent animation job regardless of role is like gold dust with how most of the industry thinks so little of animation as a medium. Like, we just had Netflix axe a bunch of animated shows because they didn't apparently do well and nobody besides them knows what that even means.

Not anime, but speaking of changing studios… When GI Joe went from Sunbow to DIC. To save on costs they canned the VAs and hired French Canadian VAs. All the voices are noticeably different. Heck at one point Flint shows up with a Southern accent. When Doug went from Nickelodeon to Disney. The most noticeable VA change was them not bringing in Billy West who did the title character and Roger. It’s not quite the same as in both cases the results were different enough that most just consider them different series. I agree that at this point they should just end the series. I also agree with the John K. comparison. In both cases the creator is so tied to the work that separating them and continuing on seems doomed.

In both cases the creator is so tied to the work that separating them and continuing on seems doomed. But again, what do you do about the likely hundreds of people unemployed expecting at least another three seasons of work in an industry that mostly treats their wares like streamer filler content and award show gags and the work isn't there because they've been hit by the budget cutter by the major companies? Because people who say that basically are treating those people as expendable, as harsh as that might seem. Even if your point isn't that.

I dont know his politics so I dont know if he will go the political route. But I definitely see the usual suspects latching onto him to bitch about cancel culture. But yeah if he doesnt end up in jail then someone will give him big money. And the toxic portion of his fans will follow him.

Justin strikes me as a false ally who rallies behind causes to talk to women so he might just do that and try to be be the David Starr of animation

(And speaking of that...live action version of a "creator" being let go: Roseanne/The Conners?)

If we're just talking about "major" characters, not worrying about why the VAs changed... (I won't count death) Peter Cullen to Jim Cummings as Monterrey Jack? Linda Feige to Susan Roman as Melissa Raccoon? Olan Soule to Adam West as Superfriends Batman? Lacey Chabert to Mila Kunis (Meg Griffin)? Not sure if we're counting Superman: TAS and Justice League as ONE series, but Tim Daly for George Newbern (Superman)?

Clarence was created and voiced by Skyler Page until he accused of groping and sexually assaulting women.
