With the benefit of hindsight, it was probably the beginning of the end for him in WWE. I thought he did a decent job of going toe to toe with Rock, but it’s clear I think Rocky wanted him to be almost a cartoon villain at times.
I often wonder if they actually legit gave it the college try if Punk would have caught fire at the Cena level. Instead, he got the usual WWE Title midcard reign they gave stars they didn’t fully trust.

I know he was a face again at this time, but man, I wish SummerSlam 2013 was Punk's last night with the company. Because the feud with RyBaxel and Heyman after... hoo boy. Fall 2013 was just a really bad time (at least for me, both personally and my interest in the product) Some of the booking in 2013 was just weird in general. Remember Ryback losing to Mark Henry then being set up as John Cena's first title challenger the next night? Remember Miz's awful face run where Ric Flair gave him the figure four leg lock and showed the enthusiasm of a Nickelodeon game show host? And not even a good game show like Double Dare or Guts, some shit like Finders Keepers.

Heck on a Raw in 2013 Ryback lost via ref stoppage.. to the Miz, who wasn't even actually doing anything particularly heinous to him. He was just tied up in the corner and the ref stopped the bout to ostensibly save Ryback. It was baffling. was that different then the time Ryback tapped out to Miz kicking him in the legs? which I thought was meant to just be Ryback being an ass and not wanting to wrestle... but like nothing came of it.

I get what you're saying, but that was right after Flair's son died and I think the point of him being worked in was so that he had a reason to be at television and have people around him to keep an eye on him for a few months.

I was a HUGE Punk fan at the time, my favorite wrestler by far. But that line just did NOT hit with me. For one, I'm sorry, but Punk saying that to the much larger and stronger Rock? Just didn't make sense. The line would've made MORE sense if the Rock said it, I guess.
But then, all I could think of was the KILLER way the line was delivered by Xzibit in Bitch Please II. "Your little lungs is too small to hotbox with God." Sounded better, flowed better, made more sense, and X said it in a way where you really believed it. Punk's sounded like a watered-down copy. I cringed.

The best version of a line like this in a wrestling context is when Flair tells Buddy Landel something like he'll lend him one of his robes but Buddy would get lost in the arms

Shoutouts to the WWE Originals Making Of mini doc that was on WWE Confidential and showed Booker T in the booth like HEY I JUST MADE SOMETHING UP CHECK THIS He proceeded to say you either get down or lay down. Booker T: Matter fact start calling me Beans and we going to call Goldust El Pollo Loco

CM Punk's heel run really only worked at its inception after he initially turned after Raw 1000. Other than that, it was a combination of the clock running out until his inevitable title loss to The Rock at Royal Rumble 2013 and some of the most basic, day-one level heel schtick that even MJF would turn up his nose at and say, "That's not trying hard enough."
Whether it was mocking Jerry Lawler's heart attack upon his return to Raw, or pouring Paul Bearer's ashes on The Undertaker, or wearing Yankee pinstripes to the ring in Boston at Night of Champions 2012, it felt like he was just doing base-level "this is what bad guys are supposed to do!" stuff.

I distinctly remember everyone talking like that line was a straight up bar, when in reality Rock could have just said "Yeah, but I'm not here to box, I'm here to whoop your ass" and no one would have remembered it at all.
In hindsight, a lot of Punk's best WWE promos are tarnished a bit, once you realize his formula for them.

Punk and Heyman was such a weird paring. Punk's already one of the best talkers in the game, the hell does he need Heyman for?

Ahh yes, the line CM Punk stole from an Xzibit song and never properly credited in the years since. That promo. EDIT and yes, it was the title song from a Delores Hall musical in the 70s and the saying existed beforehand, but Mr X to the Z was the one who had the most famous late-90s early-2000s use of it that brought the saying into popularity. I don't think he ever claimed he came up with it, did he? It's just an old saying.

Not to my knowledge, and I don't know why on earth he'd need to credit Xzibit for a commonly known saying that's over 100 years old. That would be kind of like a wrestler saying "no more Mr. Nice Guy" and claiming that they ripped off Alice Cooper.

Definitely. Earliest I could find was James Weldon Johnson's 1927 poem 'The Prodigal Son' - Young man— Young man— Your arm's too short to box with God.
I'm so very sorry, but I have to share this...I swear in my half-awake stupor, I started to read the poem to the tune of the Village People's YMCA AND Nas' "You're da Man". Young man! Your arm's too short to box with God I said, Young man! I don't kill soloists only kill squads I said, Young man! 'cause you're in a new town There's no need to be unhappy I really need to get some more caffeine in my system before reading FAN...

This had to be one of the longest wrestling talking segments ever. I remember it lasting forever. It wouldn't beat that infamous TNA segment from 2010 with Immortal talking for 45 minutes but it probably beats like even Rock: This is Your Life, 2003 HHH promos or the long attitude era show opening promos.
Punk beat Ryback in a TLC match then said he would be back out later with a pipebomb for The Rock. A couple of segments later he comes out and starts a long meandering promo with half of it having nothing to do with Rock. Then they go to commercial in the middle of a promo because it was going so long. When they come back Punk continues talking for a few more minutes before Rock eventually comes out. So we're probably 15 minutes into the promo before Rock is even out there and the back and forth part begins which probably lasts another 10 minutes or so.
It's also one of those segments/matches that the internet and live crowd were completely opposite on. I remember the internet treating it like an all-time great promo and talking about Punk owning The Rock while the live crowd was begging for Punk to finally shut up and went crazy when Rock interrupted and Rock Bottomed him.

You okay bud? No need to be rude when stating your opinion. I apologize for it coming out that way, it was just very very clear at the time since Punk was booked as the arrogant self absorbed man and Rock was the people's champ.
