This will be hard to explain what I am talking about, but I shall do my best. One example that I could think of is this from "What's Eating Gilbert Grape" that could probably help matters.
How did this sound originate? Where did it come from? All of my life I had heard it when people knock on doors or walls, but I never knew what it was called or the origin.
What do you think?

I've never felt as old and decrepit as learning that the "shave and a haircut, two bits" knock isn't universally known.
