Eh, that looks as close enough to what a “real world” version of characters who Oda depicts in a very throwback cartoony art style would probably look like.

Ultimately, it all boils down to one thing: How well they handle the march to Arlong Park. If it can't measure up, then that's it.

Well I didn't see anything as horrifying as Ed from the Cowboy Bebop live action so there's that. Looks alright though, the real question is the story execution.

What stuck out to me most was they took the thing that was in the book and put it on the screen. For this story, that's exactly what was needed

The more I watch it, the more it grows on me. Yeah, the production values look too much like those of a polished fan film, but that's true of an embarrassing amount of Netflix originals. (Even the Witcher finds ways to look cheap at times.) And it's kind of fitting for a One Piece adaptation to look a little weird. Plus, sometimes the limitations of a production - or a budget - push the creators to innovate and find solutions they might otherwise not have had with the budget of, say, Rings of Power. So who knows? Maybe starting modest and putting together a show that attracts viewership with its characters and storytelling will encourage Netflix to play the long game. Really, what a One Piece show has to do with East Blue isn't blast the viewer with spectacle. It has to get a cast together with that effortless nakama chemistry the Straw Hats have, sell the audience that this gang of goofballs and miscreants is heading out on the adventure of their lives into a vast, mysterious and fantastical world, and treat Oda's emotional beats with sincerity. I have a good feeling about the first; the third is going to be far more difficult than any CGI. But I can definitely say the trailer does do well with the second. I do think it'll win over some people that otherwise would have no idea what the show is about, simply through how well it lays out the premise and shows off some of the highlights without giving away the store. That's also a gorgeous and spirited theme to pair with the trailer, too. I'll legit pop if they can do a treatment of "Overtaken" at the right point. Lastly, I can tell already that the creators love the source material. Agree with Lizuka that the MCU-ish quips are not a great choice for One Piece, but at least the couple in the trailer seem relatively good-natured. Still hope they keep it to a minimum and, again, put some weight into the writing. So yeah, I'll give it a watch. I always root for shows to rise from humble beginnings into runaway hits.
Plus, wouldn't it be crazy if this took off and launches some live-action-anime-adaptation arms race in the streaming studios? By "crazy" some would say "horrifying", but hey, you never know...

I’m waiting for the online outrage over the live action Nami not having huge boobs. We all know it’s coming.

Honestly, this is a MUCH better trailer, and now I'm more excited. Even the characters that look a little janky, like Arlong and Kuroobi, still look like the closest approximation you can get to those characters without going full CGI. All the characters look the way they SHOULD.
And the little Easter eggs are cool. The Straw Hats dressing in outfits from the front page colour spreads, the bounty posters for Bellamy, Foxy and Cavendish, and who may be Dragon at Roger's execution, all come across like the people working on the show actually care.
I do find it interesting that they seemed to go out of their way to hide Kuro and Morgan, and don't really even acknowledge Don Krieg, while Buggy and Arlong are front and center.
EDIT: Also, from what little I've seen, they've nailed Zoro and Sanji's rivalry PERFECTLY. Though I do find it amusing that the guy whose attack names are all in French is played by a British actor.

Upon taking another look, it looks like the scene with Sanji and Kuroobi takes place on the Baratie, so I'm wondering if that means they're cutting Don Krieg entirely.
EDIT: I also just realized why they go out of their way to not show Kuro. They're trying to hide the fact that Klahadore is Kuro for any new viewers.

It looks very good. I hope Netflix doesn't get cold feet and can it after one season.
I still don't like Nami's obvious wig. It is too distracting. Why didn't they just cast a natural redhead?
Given the number of episodes and the fact they are likely going to reach the end of Arlong Park--I expect it's going to have a one villain each episode format. With Arlong Park being a two parter. I hope it doesn't feel too rushed---and while I didn't like Don Krieg much as a villain, I do hope they leave him in because the reveal that he set off to the Grand Line with a fleet of 100 ships and returned 7 days later with just one really set the Grand Line up as something to be feared.
Hopefully when they reach the Grand Line, they slow things down a bit -- the Arabasta Arc really can't be rushed through

Reviews coming in and apparently this breaks the "live action anime" curse. Damn, they might actually have done it.

Saw the first couple of eps at the premiere in Japan last night. It has some big issues but is fun. Nowhere in the bebop realm of bad if that’s what you’re wondering lol
