Thing is, theatres were already in trouble *before* the pandemic. Now after the last couple of years they should be tripping over themselves to get asses in seats, instead of giving patrons yet another reason to avoid going

Not taking a shot at you, but I'm saddened by how much I see this sentiment. Some movies are made to be experienced in the theatre. I couldn't imagine feeling the same sense of wonder and majesty at seeing Jurassic Park, for example, for the first time had it not been on the big screen. Also, there's another reason for me: Like....people work there. Saying "Movie theaters need to die, I'm glad it's happening" to spite greedy execs is all well and good, but it kinda ignores that there are normal people who depend on the paychecks from theater jobs. Personally when I say the movie theater industry needs to die what I actually mean is that the current market of it, with them having severe markups on everything and getting the first run of everything under the sun because if any company doesn't do that then they throw a giant bitch fit about it, needs to go. By all means I'm good with movie theaters remaining a thing as a novelty for people into the experience but I do firmly believe they should no longer be the primary means of distributing movies or get exclusivity because it's just an outdated, wildly impractical concept that by and large only exists to spite consumers at this point.

The problem with that thinking is it doesn't address the source of the problem. Movies are getting more and more expensive to make, and, like it or not, theatres are where the bulk of those costs are recouped before the movies hit the home market for more reasonable prices. If theatres go away or become a secondary means of distribution those costs get more directly passed onto the consumer.

Makes sense to me. It’s how literally every other entertainment show with seating operates. Want better tickets pay better pricing, unless you think front row at the 50 yard line should cost the same as an obscured vision nosebleed. The outrage to this is asinine, and the irony of the article I read quoting a pro wrestling as being outraged over this is just amazing. Even my local Indy charges an extra $5 for front row It isn't a 1:1 comparison though. A football stadium will seat tens of thousands vs a theater where there might be 200 seats. The view and distance is gonna be negligible. No outrage here, it's just kind of dumb to try and overcomplicate things in what's already becoming a niche business.

Should've at least done it before Avatar came out.
Anyways, sound like a quick route to bankruptcy if they actually go through with it.

Really no matter what AMC does they're kind of just rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic right now anyway. Basically the only thing keeping up the stock price above pennies right now is meme stock people artificially inflating it because they think a single good weekend for the box office will save the company.

It’s like companies are incapable of focus testing any idea ever. This should have never made it out of the planning stage.

I genuinely love going to see movies in theaters; I much, much prefer a night out rather than sitting home and streaming something.
That said, AMC just mostly sucks. The fact they make up so much of the market also sucks. Glad I have a Kerasotes near me.

I was wondering about that, my movie theater did raise their prices a little bit a few weeks back, but seating was never asked about, so I assumed they'd just decided to do a base price raise instead of the rest.
