This movie is almost 24 years old now. I hadn't watched it for the longest time and randomly plugged it in, and much to my shock, I found that I actually enjoyed it. Maybe absence makes the heart grow fonder, or maybe it's nostalgia. Either way, I actually enjoyed it.

I'm now watching Attack of the Clones.

I re-watched it recently. It's definitely better than I remembered, but I think that's only because Attack of the Clones is so bad, it makes Menace look better in hindsight.

The prequels are better than Rise of Skywalker because they, at least (and at most) come from someone’s completed vision and not from a board room where executives stared at a white board of things fans complained about the last movie trying to piece together some unearned fan service.
They’re still total shit, mind you.
But they’re the shit Lucas intended

I think the prequels get the "Come back X, all is forgiven " syndrome based on sequel trilogy disappointment. That and kids who grew up with them.

That one's real rough. Yeah like, with Jar Jar I never get the sense it was intentionally playing up an offensive stereotype but with Watto... Yeah, come on George.

I was going through a rough time in early 1999, this and Austin Powers 2 saved my life that summer, so I can't hate it

Ugly stereotypes with the aliens aside, I’ve seen worse sci fi movies easily. Apparently there was an actor way better than Jake Lloyd but Lloyd got the part anyway (and quality of his work aside, the backlash he and Ahmed Best received drove them both off from the franchise, so that was a raw deal for him as well).
I always felt even as a teen Jar Jar could have worked had he been like a useful scout character, maybe an ex-thief. The way he klutzes into his victories, even in the wacky world of Star Wars, it was still hard for the audience to swallow. The franchise had more than enough comic relief to where he didn’t feel needed.

Anyway, while it's still my second least favorite of any of the Episode movies, there are some things I like about it. Ship designs are nice. The Naboo ships are really sleek and serve as a nice contrast to the designs of the Imperial Era. Liam Neeson and Ewan McGregor are great. I loved the lightsaber duel between Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan vs Darth Maul. Even if it kinda fails as an actual duel at times, it was a really fun martial arts exhibition. Also made the double bladed lightsaber movie canon. Coruscant being introduced in movie canon as a city-planet and the Republic (and later Imperial) capital world. It was pretty amazing to look at that skyline the first time Padme's ship entered the atmosphere. I just hope Timothy Zahn got at least a nice gift basket for coming up with it in the first place. ![:P](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/tongue.png)

Tried a few years back to go and re watch it for the first time in 18 years. After 30 minutes turned it off.
Come to realize that my love of Star Wars died off a bit over 20 years ago. Like the new trilogy. I saw Force Awakens in a theater, even enjoyed it a bunch. Haven't bothered seeing any of the movies or tv shows since then.
