Did you know what was coming? Did you know he was going to move forward as a heel? I thought it was going to be a buildup to Roman vs Wyatt at Mania 37. Hell even when he was with Paul, I thought Paul was going to turn face. That is how much in denial I was about Roman going heel.

I suspected a little more, bit by bit, but I definitely did not anticipate how hard Roman was going to throw himself into it. I do have to wonder if the leukemia experience meant he A. saw how much his peers truly respected him/cared about him, and B. made it clear that he had a finite time as a wrestler, and that removed a lot of hesitation from his performance.

I thought the "YOU'LL NEVER SEE IT COMING" tag line was about like some new faction debuting or Retribution getting a big power up, so they did twist me on Roman coming back and as a heel at the PPV the week after

I didn't see SummerSlam as heelish but once Heyman was in the picture he was heel.

I wonder what would have happened if he didn't go on hiatus before WrestleMania that year.

It was a very low-key turn for a guy who had been booked as the top face for years. You expect some massive angle/moment for a turn like that but it just kind of happened.
I don't think it was until a couple of weeks in when he was manipulating Jey that it fully sank in that wow he's actually heel. Even when they had that cliffhanger ending with him sitting down with Heyman part of me was still thinking okay maybe Heyman is going face or they're just going to give Roman more of an edge as a ruthless, badass face but no, he was already heel.

Even after he returned at the PPV I had no idea it was the start of his heel turn until he aligned with Heyman. Actually even then I wasn’t entirely sure.

It didn't help that he started his heel run by attacking Bray Wyatt and Braun Strowman after their god awful feud that seemed to kill off both their characters, so seeing Roman lay waste to both of them and get the Universal title away from them was the most babyface thing he could have done.

Wasn’t Braun going heel and Bray was the guy that manipulated him? I thought Forsure it was a face return lol

Remember his heel turn was solidified at the next WWE PPV Payback 2020. This PPV took place a WHOLE 7 days after the Summerslam PPV.
