If cartoons count
Thundercats and TMNT 87 were both great at establishing the main characters and setting the story. I was hooked immediately.

Power Rangers RPM does a hell of a job with its first 2-3 episodes establishing its setting & intrigue with Dillan.

The Shield.
In the premiere FX didnt run a commercial for the first half hour. When the first commercial ran I finally sat back and realized it had been a half hour and I had not even noticed.

Most of the shows I was gonna mention been mentioned.
My Name is Earl-I saw the ads for this but was refusing to watch NBC after how they treated Freaks and Geeks. The night Earl aired it's debut was at a buddy's place and he watched it. The debut was good enough to get me to break a long time boycot of NBC.

The Shield. In the premiere FX didnt run a commercial for the first half hour. When the first commercial ran I finally sat back and realized it had been a half hour and I had not even noticed. The last scene of the pilot shocked the hell out of me. What a huge twist that was and really got the show going in an unpredictable route.

The pilot of the 90s animated series 'The Critic' is incredibly consistent and refined for a first episode ever.

Black Mirror, that episode with the pig, so good that the rest of the season's episodes suffered as they were unconnected and not as good. While not the best episode of "Black Mirror," the pilot episode (also known as "The National Anthem") is still one of the best of the series. That said, whenever I encourage someone to get into the show, I always tell them to start with the second episode ("Fifteen Million Merits") and if they like it, then go back to episode one, because I don't want to hear their reactions when they find out what "The National Anthem" is about and have to explain that that's not what every episode is.

The Boys - Sets the scene perfectly for the rest of the series right at the beginning of the first episode. Invincible - Is similar but it's the _end_ of the first episode.

Both shows turned to trash, but yeah Lost and Walking Dead. Still my favorite episode of TWD.

LA Law. This is not going to be your typical procedural.

One of my favorite sitcom pilots is Cheers. From the jump all of the writers know the character’s roles and the cast immediately gets the rhythms of the comedy. It would change a lot in the 11 years it was on the air, but much of the charm of the show is there from the start.

I'd say supernatural considering it lasted for 15 years.

![](https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/a/ab/TheCatandtheClaw.jpg) Not the greatest episode of Batman: The Animated Series, but a strong enough one that really set the tone for everything that was to come.
