Series finales are easy. What shows had the best debuts?

The premiere of season 2 of "Channel Zero" rattled me deeply. Some of the most effective psychological horror ever. The rest of the season is good, too, as is the whole series.

Lost begins with so much chaos and mystery. Hooked from the first shot.
I'll also give a shout out to The Blacklist. I loved the opening scene so much and it added so much intrigue into the series. So memorable other similar shows have used the same opening premise.

While not intended to be the first episode, "Simpsons Roasting on an Open Fire" was the best way for the show to start

Lost's series premiere was excellent. Grabbed you from the start.
Star Trek TNG's debut wasn't one of the best in the series, but it was a fine way to establish the new Enterprise and cast, as well as introducing Q. It was also arguably the best episodes (two-parter) of the otherwise dreadful first season.

The Walking Dead very much established the show's universe in the first 50 minutes and ended on a cliffhanger.
Alice in Borderland, that rarest of things; a quality live-action manga adaptation had a wonderful opener with nods to 28 Days Later, Battle Royale, and The Cube.
Black Mirror, that episode with the pig, so good that the rest of the season's episodes suffered as they were unconnected and not as good.

Both shows turned to trash, but yeah Lost and Walking Dead.

Normally I hate the trope of a show episode or movie starting chaotically and then go “(unit of time) earlier/previously” .. you’d usually see them during a cold open and the episode builds up to that moment.
Anyway the only time I have seen this done well was the first episode of Breaking Bad

I'd put the first episode of Red Dwarf up against any other show, easily.

A lot of really good ones have already been mentioned, but I'll go with two medical dramas: House and ER.

South Park
It may not have held up compared to what came later, but EVERYONE was quoting this in 1997, and nearly overnight all Spencers stores had every piece of merchandise you would want for the show.

Gundam: The Witch From Mercury has a very impressive first episode in terms of setting one heck of a tone. The only hesitation I have is there's also a prologue that some may choose to count instead as the "first episode". That is also very good but not really a first episode.

I know it kind of went sideways at the end and New Blood is hit or miss, but Dexter's first episode is one of the best episodes of TV, period. The music, the cinematography, Hall's performance. It's all so good.
