Watching clips of it.
I know Onita is pretty crazy, but you'd gotta think even he realized this might have been a bit much to do.
Lucky as heck that no one died.

And this is why we test stunts before we go live.

I remember hearing about this match and how crazy it was in one of the Apter mags and found it on a Japan compilation from a tape trader. Imagine my surprise when I watched and found out that yes the Sheik almost did die…but it was from smoke inhalation and heat and it was like 2 minutes long.
What a blunder that entire idea was.

There was another Fire match a few years later where the ropes were gone and on both sides were dudes holding torches. Pogo VS Matsunaga.

There was a crazy fire deathmatch from W*ING in 1993... Kanemura and Nakamaki versus Jado and Gedo (it's like these guys have been around forever). Kanemura gets dropped into a puddle of lighter fluid, he was hospitalized for almost a month with burns.

Sheik after managing to escape the ring despite burns over half his body, wanted to continue the match.

On one side were barbed wire and then torches on the other.

Don't know the exact details, but I recall reading about a match in my country where a guy decided to do some sort of unplanned spot where he dove into an opponent after covering himself on lighter fluid and setting himself on fire.
The guy crashed and burned, literally and figuratively.
