marketing strategy that will not work because the people who want to see Mrs Twit described as a nasty old bitch do not also want to hear James Bond crack wise about congolese pygmies or whatever the f***

Free market capitalism. The publishers want to sell lots of books so they remove offensive material that will hurt that goal.
There has been no movement to ban or censor these books. People that read them, like myself, can understand that they were written at a different time. This is self censorship.
Roald Dahl thing was the exact same. And they backed off as far as I know.

Yeah, as others said, this is just them trying to get eyes on the books rather than "political correctness", though I have to wonder if it'll be worth it. Once you cut out all of Fleming's sexism and racism, you'll be left with pamphlets rather than books.

How about in a few more years time, these will be the only Bond novels that will be reissued ![](https://pbs.twimg.com/media/Fp_FeHuXoAEHwWt?format=jpg&name=900x900)

It's stupid, and just gives ammunition to the right wing. If no one gives the right wing ammunition then they just make it up. Pizza parlor basement for instance. The books are horribly racist and sexist. The rights holders dont want to publish it without changes. I wouldnt want to be associated with them. And really, is it really going to ruin the books to remove a bunch of horrible shit? I would think it would take most people out of the story having some horribly racist stuff just pop up out of nowhere. They could just not publish them. Make my copies worth more.

I thought that the Dahl books weren't being rewritten anymore?
Offer both versions and profit from all the angry anti-woke people buying the originals in protest.

I don’t know, I read Live and Let Die and didn’t find anything racist *checks notes* I’m sorry I had that wrong, actually it was hard to find anything in that one that was NOT racist

I'd like to think people could have some semblance of common sense and be aware that fictional works tend to be reflective of the periods in which they were created, which often means they use depictions that would absolutely not fly today. It would at least provide some discourse on how media evolves with society (at least, hopefully). But... corporations have to assume the audience who buys it will just drool on the book, so here we are.

Once you cut out all of Fleming's sexism and racism, you'll be left with pamphlets rather than books. And also no fun. James Bond is a thoroughly messed up dinosaur of a man. That’s why people *like* him. It makes him different, more challenging and interesting to audiences, especially in the modern era.

The basic jist was we need to learn from the past, not run from it. Reading stuff like this makes us better people by reflecting on what’s wrong with it, not pretending it never happened. And Fleming was not a good person, dude was racist, homophobic and misogynistic. But erasing history is never the answer,

And Fleming was not a good person, dude was racist, homophobic and misogynistic. But erasing history is never the answer, On one hand, I get that, but on the other, it's not really erasing history when the originals are readily available. The books sold well, there are many, many copies out there, and probably not that difficult or expensive to get for someone who's motivated to read them in their original form. The issue is more that James Bond continues to be a name they want to keep pushing and making money off of, but the people putting the books out really don't have the desire to slap their name on them in their current form. More cynically, though, this does get people talking about the books, and some people will peek in out of curiosity.

Just keep the originals available digitally with a disclaimer so anyone who really wishes to read them in that form can do so, knowing full well what they expect.
