We all know that Sega 16 bit system was called the Genesis in North America and the Mega Drive everywhere else but were games released under the mega drive name in North America? The reason why I ask is because ever since the 90s, I own a copy of a Castle Of Illusion for the Mega Drive even through I live in Iowa. So when I was a kid, my aunt and uncle give me their sega genesis, the 32x add on and a box of games, one of them being Castle Of Illusion. ![](https://i.ibb.co/YXZ10C7/20230226-222725.jpg) ![](https://i.ibb.co/ngkyXLy/20230226-223438.jpg) All the other games say Genesis on them beside that Castle of Illusion. I just wonder if store sold sega games under both the mega drive and Genesis name? Remember this is the 90s so the internet is pretty much non existed and my aunt and uncle are not the type that would know about importing especially for a game that came out here so Im not sure where they would had gotten it beside a toy r us or walmart. I just been curious about this for a while now. I even seen the same mega drive version of castle of illusion being sold by Americans on ebay so If anyone have an idea about this, I would appreciate it.

Hmm if the cart fits in a US Genesis I doubt it is a Japanese release. Do Euro Mega Drive games ,IE Pal games, play on NTSC systems?
The only Mega Drive games I imported back in the day were all from Japan. Just had to shave the sides of the cart,or just plug in a Game Genie and put the cart on top that.

It is possible that it may be a misprint. I have had a mislabeled game for Mega Drive (Quackshot) but it worked fine on my US Genesis. Hmm if the cart fits in a US Genesis I doubt it is a Japanese release. Do Euro Mega Drive games ,IE Pal games, play on NTSC systems? Answer: It's complicated. Some games do have region lockout. And even if they work on a US Genesis, there are some games that are PAL Optimized for 50 Hz. So putting it in a US Genesis will cause the game to play not quite right. ![:P](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/tongue.png)

Thx.
I had no idea on PAL Mega drive stuff. The only reason I had some imported Japanese Mega Drive games was a buddy's uncle lived in Japan. So instead of waiting for the US Batman genesis game to get released,Get Dean to buy the mega drive version and just take a sander to the sides of the cart.
I had like 6 imported games. Batman,DJ Boy and then some shooters.

I am always fascinated by stuff like this...
Take for instance I had a black tights Sting wrestling figure from Galoob growing up in Rural IL (born in 84) and apparently this was a UK figure and the US got the blue tights...
Still confuses me to this day

It the same size and shape as a genesis cartridge so I was guessing it was a European/Pal. It has no problem running on my genesis and from what research I did, apparently games from 89 to 92 were region free.

Unfortunately I dont have the original case for the game anymore so I dont know if that say Genesis or Mega Drive on it.

If memory serves, it was something that came some time after the Megadrive/Genesis had been released over the world. It was a long time before they actually started optimizing games for PAL markets. They often ran slower than the US/Japanese releases. That's where the 50 vs 60 Hz difference comes in. You usually hear it in the music on Megadrive stuff. I remember one UK gaming magazine in the 90s reviewing an import copy of Tekken 2 on PS1, and re-reviewing the eventual PAL release, and they criticised Namco for not optimizing it. If they did percentages (this particular magazine did ratings out of 5), I'm sure they'd have docked it a few points. It was still positive, but that was a thing.

Interestingly, some North American copies of Shadow Dancer I run into also have the Mega Drive logo and not the Genesis one, but work for Genesis consoles.

It seem like it was a common thing during the first couple years of the Genesis lifespan since both shadow dancer and castle of illusion came out in 1990.

Makes sense since I believe the Genesis name was more last minute than expected, so a few games still got the MD branding
