It's still horrible, but it's horrible in a fun way, IMO. Many other bad movies are just depressing to get through but with Batman and Robin you can at least get enjoyment out of how bad it is

I always thought of it as more of an updated version of the Adam West Batman series than anything. So in that regard it was a fine film. Just not when you compare it to just about every other Batman film before or after it lol See, but I would argue that Batman ‘66 works because it’s actually got a dry wit about it. It’s campy, but Adam West is so casually deadpan and earnest that it becomes something genuinely clever. Batman & Robin is loud, excessive camp that forgets to wink at the audience.

Back in the day, it was seen as the absolute worst superhero film ever made. Now, while it still has its haters, talk about the film is less vicious, with Schwarzenegger's Mr. Freeze being noted as a highlight by many. Is the film now seen as not as bad as its reputation? I have softened on Joel Schumacher. While he's not my favorite director, there was massive studio interference in both the films. They would add silly requirements during filming so they could create more toys to sell. From Enemy guns having glowing lights attached to them for no reason, to the needless addition of 4-5 extra batsuits. The entire scene where they magically get ice skates in their shoes was added from WB execs because they thought it would be "fun for kids" (the irony that most of us here were kids when that came out and all hated it) He had to toe the line between it being the campy 60's Batman, while keeping the dark theme of the first two Tim Burton films, which was a essentially a giant contradiction. Can anyone point to a movie where movie execs massively interfered in the production and it turned out good? I mean, WB could not help themselves and did the EXACT same thing two decades later with the attempt at their own universe.

I think there's more of an appetite now for the kind of cinematic brand Batman and Robin represents, some of the post-Snyder DC movies very much ARE better versions of this, MCU to some extent is also similar, only they were given a chance at the time.
Batman and Robin fell into the unfortunate position of following up on three prior films which still clung to darker elements of the Bat brand, and leaned too hard into attracting kids and trying to sell toys (they admit to it being 'toyetic' on the DVDs)
The film I feel is a great representation of the comics code-approved silver age Batman brought forth into the 20th century, it is bright, hopeful, optimistic, and does have a riveting dramatic piece with Alfred's bout with McGregor Syndrome. It really glues the whole thing together. I also like the chemistry between Clooney and O'Donnel.
The soundtrack to the movie, like with Forever, is great, but hard to listen to now due to how difficult it is to separate art from artists (Corrigan and R Kelly)

Last time I watched it I just found it to be a largely very dull sit. I'd way rather watch pretty much any of the other movies except BvS over it because it's really only even slightly entertaining when Mr. Freeze is onscreen.

Fun fact: Did you know that Hulk Hogan was in consideration to play Mr. Freeze? What a f***ing movie that would have been. Say what you want about Arnold's performance, but at least he's an actual actor.

It's still a horrible movie and I don't think anyone's going to call it a cinematic masterpiece or anything. But it's gotten a sort of "The Room" appeal now where the movie is so bad in silly and goofy ways that you can enjoy it ironically. Sort of an MST3k appeal. Like, campy bad (which B&R is) is a lot easier to enjoy just to make fun of versus a bad movie where it's boring or offensive to the senses.
Yeah, it's got that MST3K appeal. With the rise of "Bad movie" nights and people online riffing on movies, people have softened on it. It's bad, but you can have fun while watching it. It's not boring, it's not a movie that you can't even enjoy riffing on.

We can never forget that this movie is f***ing awful. Never forget that. But at least it’s funny. I still remember watching it at the cinema and thinking it was the absolute shits. That memory will always stick with me.

I will say, when I saw this in the cheapo theater when it came out, I think I was one of the only people in there at the time who was under the age of 20. I remember being rather embarrassed that there was a small smattering applause when the urinating dog was thawed out.

It's not the worst Batman movie since Batman '89. Stupid, but fun.

It’s incredibly stupid and cringey outside of Uma and Arnold not giving a f*** and eating all the scenery, but it can be poked fun at in the way one would roast The Room or The Apple. B&R at least also *looks* fun, and it isn’t an incomprehensible and depressing mess like Batman vs. Superman (maybe my least favorite “major comic book” film, because I legit was hoping that turned out good).

Probably not ever going to happen with the movies, but having a Batman show that is more centered around being a surrogate mentor to Robin would be interesting. But yeah, I am more than sick of exclusive Batman. I'm just kinda sick of the "gritty, realistic" Batman. They can still be dark or moody stories, but I want to see a more fantastic Batman that explores his sci-fi elements. Have him battle foes like meta-humans or vampires or aliens, use concepts like time travel or magic, give him some unusual gadgets. He's been around for more then 80 years, there are way more stories to draw from then just him beating up mobsters. I honestly have an idea for a Batman-alien abduction movie with the Dominators as the villains that I think would be great. I think this is part of why I liked The Batman as much as I did. The lenses he used and the Batmobile that's basically Christine both definitely pulled things in a bit of a more fantastical direction from the Nolan movies. Makes me hope they'll ramp it up in the next one given the moral Bruce took away of needing to lighten the f*** up for both his sake's and the city.

It's got some amusing highlights, but honestly, yeah. When I watched it last, I was taken aback by how dull a lot of the in-between stuff was. Batman Forever's really flawed, too, but I think it's more consistently interesting, at least, even if some of that is it being impossible to ignore that it's very clearly a movie made out of the skeleton of another movie Tim Burton partially made.
