Like that infamous tweet. It doesn’t necessarily have to be advertised as being luxury or anything though. I remember before I was even a teenager going to a thrift store with my Mom. I was really into grunge and hard rock. I saw some old band shirts. I remember getting a Nirvana shirt in great condition. I was tempted to get a Use Your Illusion era GNR shirt but that one was in TERRIBLE condition. I think I was talked into not buying it. I don’t regret not getting the GNR shirt. But it was before you could get tons of GNR shirts online at the click of a button. Pretty much you were at the mercy of eBay to get GNR shirts at the time. Still, this one was too far gone to be worth it. It was the UYI 1 cover but it was faded to the point where it was almost unrecognizable. Unless you were a fan you’d have no idea it was a shirt for the band.

Any local video game store that sells a rare game with a ripped up label/damaged for the same price as a good condition/complete copy.

Here’s an oldie. I remember going to the North Street Farmer’s Market in Boston and someone pushing a single container of rotten strawberries HARD. I remember he put it literally down on the street away from his other fruits and yelling something like, “Anyone want to buy this for a dollar!?” He really didn’t want to take the loss on those rotten strawberries.

Whenever I get a used book in supposed mint condition, but missing its dust jacket. For whatever reason I can't seem to get a copy of John Williams' "Augustus" with its dust jacket. Tried it three times, got disappointed three times. It's a bit like buying booster packs for card games. You hope for the good ones, but are prepared for the lowest commons.

I've seen two different ps4's for sale on facebook market place recently, "everything works perfectly except the hdmi port £20" and "ps4 for sale excellent condition works perfectly, small hole cut into the base casing above the fan to reduce overheating issue £60" the small hole was the exact size of the fan so there was a 2 and a half inch circle hacked out of the ps4 casing.
facebook market place is a gold mine for this level of stupidity.

I went to pick up a used jeep my buddy was buying off Facebook Marketplace. He had the same model already and was just looking for another cheap one to strip for parts. The Jeep was listed in "solid drivable condition, currently used to drive to work daily" so he was going to jump in it and drive it back home with me following him just in case.
We show up and the Jeep is sitting on blocks. The owner said he sold the tires separately about 2 hours before we got there.

This reminded me of something similar. Years ago Anchor Bay put out a great looking edition of the Satanic Rites of Dracula on DVD. The movie became public domain through a fowl up and as such for years home media sellers would Hawk really bad looking copies of the movie. For years on Amazon there were a ton of buyers claiming to sell the Anchor Bay version. But I read multiple complaints of people who bought it and the unscrupulous seller just sent one of those crappy public domain prints. It put me off ever taking a chance myself as even today the only copies I own of the film are the public domain version on those big value movie sets.

This is my main problem with buying horror movies on Amazon! I'm often left unsure which version is sold, because reviews of one specific product talk about different versions, different cuts. One would think it's easy to get an uncut version of "Dawn of the Dead", but it's very possible you get a FSK 16 copy when you expected an uncut FSK 18 one from the description and images.

I buy records and I've had a few nightmares with this. I've got one which came sealed with a huge, perfectly straight scratch right through side one, track one, another with the labels on the wrong sides, and the preowned market is a real gamble because some sellers have extremely questionable ideas about what constitutes VG+.

Yup. I try not to buy online unless that’s the only place I can find it. Even stores have gotten bad I’ve seen crap that scratched to hell and the sheave is falling apart which would be fine in a $3 bin but they want $20,

And yeah, bricks and mortar stores can be iffy too. There's one I go to occasionally which is mostly fine and the owners are decent and everything, but I still remember seeing them trying to sell an Atomic Rooster LP, where the sleeve had been lost and someone had "made" a new one by writing the name of the record on the inner sleeve in biro, for £40.

No, we can't offer more that $2.50 in credit for that copy of NCAA Basketball for the SNES.
("Sees a deplorable conditioned one for $39.99 in case.)

I once saw a wrestling promotion based out of Atlanta that was in horrible condition. I passed on it.

That would have a lengthy waiting list for viewings in London.

Couple years ago I bought a dude's entire collection of Champions of the Galaxy wrestling game cards for a few hundred bucks. He advertised all the sets he had, and that they were complete. I took a chance because he was well known in the community and so I thought the chances of getting ripped off were slim. He sent the cards to me in a big box, just thrown into the box in no particular order, so that I had to spend hours sorting through everything to make sure it was all there. Came to find out almost every single set was missing cards and the documentation that went with each set.
I contacted the dude and he was just really casual about it, told me that he would look around because he thought he had a lot of that stuff in other places. Ok dude, but if you know right where it is, why didn't you ship it to me with the rest of the shit? Weeks went by, and I kept having to check in with him, and he would update me that he found XYZ and was about to ship it. I'm like "Dude, don't ship it until you find all the stuff" and he's just like "ok I'll keep looking" and more weeks went by of hearing nothing unless I initiated the check-in.
Found out that the dude sold his collection so he could afford to go to the convention, so f*** me I'm ruining this guy's summer vacation plans if I red flag him on Paypal, and causing him massive inconvenience by actually insisting that he clean out his attic to find *all* the shit he sold me. When he starts acting flustered with me, I know I'm effed. I'm not going to get the cards, I'm going to turn him into Paypal and make an enemy, and given how prolific this dude is in the community, I'm not going to be able to hang out there anymore without drama. I turned him in anyway and got my refund. I don't know if the dude found a way to go to convention, but he never apologized or took any responsibility.
