So wasn’t Bryan one of Vince’s favorite wrestlers? And a guy that Vince genuinely cared about? So why was he so hell bent on not giving him his Mania 30 moment?

Because Bryan becoming the most over guy in the company wasn’t down to Vince’s booking and it always takes Vince ages to realise that someone getting themselves over like that is the person to book in the big spots.

He loved him but likely didn’t see him as the lead of the company until the fans told him he was wrong and he (thankfully) listened.

He seemed to get increasingly more "only my booking idea is right" over the years and having to change his plans for WM30 made him quadruple down on it afterwards.

Apparently, Vince McMahon thinks his personal tastes in wrestlers aren't what appeals to the masses. Like if that's to be believed, he's a big workrate nerd and loves the smaller, technical guys like Danielson. Wouldn't be surprised if that's why he pushed so hard with Bret and HBK in the mid-90's after Hogan left.

Apparently, Vince McMahon thinks his personal tastes in wrestlers aren't what appeals to the masses. Like if that's to be believed, he's a big workrate nerd and loves the smaller, technical guys like Danielson. Wouldn't be surprised if that's why he pushed so hard with Bret and HBK in the mid-90's after Hogan left. This has been my going theory, and I think it's why Vince got so prone to incessant tinkering and re-writing. He's a man who only really knows wrestling, but prides himself on marketing wrestling to the world outside that bubble. There's got to be some bizarre cognitive dissonance going on there. |

Cena was good for the money no matter how much they complained and I knew it! They just need to SHUT! UP!" |

I’m not sure how often he did the full on shave probably at least twice per day but he supposedly had an electric shaver in his briefcase that he’d just pull out randomly throughout the day and stay one step ahead of his beard. |

I’m not sure how often he did the full on shave probably at least twice per day but he supposedly had an electric shaver in his briefcase that he’d just pull out randomly throughout the day and stay one step ahead of his beard. you know at least 3-15 creative meetings got adjourned early because Vince saw a single strand of facial hair and immediately lost his mind |

It took him years after the "Yes Movement" started to even give him the title, and even then they immediately have him lose it. Then they go out of their way to cast him as second class, going so far as to say "guys like him leading the company back in the day would have caused WCW to win the Monday Night Wars". Then they turned him heel for Bray Wyatt, while trying to prop up Batista...and yes, while he was given the WrestleMania main event, he's given next to nothing as far as meaningful storylines afterward...feuding with Kane in segments on Raw that are in the middle of the show. He eventually vacates the belt due to injury. He then returned shortly before the Royal Rumble, where at the event..they made it a point to show him get eliminated early on, so they could focus on Roman Reigns instead. At WrestleMania, Bryan wrestled for the "coveted" Intercontinental title...since he'd never won it. Big whoop. After his retirement, he came back and had some success, but he certainly wasn't given center stage again. He had some good moments and was a good heel, but at this point he wasn't going to be "the guy". Vince made many excuses over not pushing Bryan, including my favorite "fans just like chanting stuff, it has nothing to do with you". I'm not saying that Bryan would have turned the business around, but he was certainly the most universally loved wrestler since probably 2004 Cena, and arguably got bigger pops. But Vince hesitated and made excuses until it was too late, and even when he was given that moment, it was inauthentic since the focus of the company was elsewhere. Because it's entirely possible to have a lot of admiration & respect for someone while at the same time not thinking they're the right person for a job. This works in the reality of an actual work environment. When it comes to the staged level of performing for an audience...I don't see how this applies. Like, is it too much of a problem to try? You see, with a real job, you'd have to promote someone to that position, train them in that position, and evaluate them in that position. With wrestling...you give them an opportunity and gauge the reaction. Unlike a real job when someone fails, you can easily plug someone back into the same role without a big headache... especially when you have two shows a week to do so if it's a massive disaster. Instead, Vince had a premonition, based off of nothing...and decided it made more sense to try to bury the guy in the hopes that the fans would give up, instead of giving him a chance. That is what we call petty. |

This theory would be backed by his interview on the Pat McAfee show, when Pat flat out asked him why VKM hates the word "wrestling" and he responded with something like "i love wrestling, but there was a stigma around what 'rasslin' was in the 70s and 80's, and he wanted to shed for the sake of growing his business". He saw how Andre the Giant was marketed like a superhero in pop culture, and figured there was more money in doing that, than letting guys like Bruno or Bob Backlund wrestle a grappling style for 65 minutes. Ultimately, he was right. In this situation I think they spent a lot of money on bringing Batista back and wanted to see that through. But generally, from day one of him being in the company you can tell they knew what they had with Bryan. He was consistently featured.
Should he have been what Cena/Reigns are? That was never really his appeal. I think it's telling that he's the biggest star in AEW and he's not 'the guy' there either.
As for their personal relationship - Bryan's open letter after he left WWE makes that fairly clear. He's a huge Vince guy.

Vince is a twisted old fruit who hates being wrong about things. he mentally made his mind up that Bryan Danielson was going to be a midcarder and hated that the audience disagreed with him. it was something he couldnt control, so he just kept doubling down until the fans finally broke him.

Maybe the personal connection didn’t happen until after the Mania 30 moment? Mania 30 was 2014, Danielson left the company in 2021. That’s 7 years for a close personal relationship to develop |
