Punk was hated for telling people not to do drugs. That Feud is one of the biggest the Heel was telling the 100% truth example.

Punk was hated for telling people not to do drugs. That Feud is one of the biggest the Heel was telling the 100% truth example. The only thing is that Jeff in kayfabe was portrayed as being on the straight and narrow and wasn’t on drugs anymore, Punk was just being a jerk by telling people that Jeff is a drug addict when in kayfabe he wasn’t. Also, during this time when CM Punk had the Straight Edge Society, the baby face commentators on more than one occasion, would say: “The message he is spreading is fine. It’s just that the way he’s spreading the message isn’t fine.” |

I think Everyone vs. Stone Cold in late '97 might be the best example of this. Dude was just a horrible human being and everyone who called him out for it was casted as a villain by the audience.

Yeah no. At the time the narrative was that Jeff was clean and trying to keep sober and Punk was just being a sanctimonious dickhead. It REALLY didn't help that the narrative was almost immediately undermined by reality when Jeff got arrested (again) for driving a truck full of illegal drugs across state lines.

Punk's straight edge heel persona would have worked better if he was actually not living the lifestyle behind the scenes.
Same way I always thought the planet's champion Daniel Bryan should have been showing up to the arena in an SUV and leaving it running.
Punk actually doesn't drink and really lives straight edge. Sanctimony works for heels, but full blown hypocrisy is even better.

No way. Punk was a sanctimonious asshole who tried to further stigma against addicts.
Maybe he was right that Jeff is an addict, but he was 100% wrong that people aren't undeserving of our love and support just because they are.

Well people are really bad with sympathy for people who fall off the wagon, so it could get over even if its a horrible take. Say Jeff got sloppy, he was falling over, attacking faces who were trying to help gimmick etc. And Punk was making honest, heartfelt attempts to get him clean but Jeff violently rejected it all. It'd get over, sure. |

The only time he was right in the angle was when Jeff was insisting Punk pretended to hurt his eye, when Punk pointed out he had prescribed eyedrops, which proved that he did indeed screw his eye up and need medical intervention.
That was like, one night out of the feud, though, where Punk was otherwise being a prick.

That...isn't what happened at all. His house was raided, and they found drugs in his house in amounts that were large enough to hit him with drug trafficking charges. Also, they were prescription drugs. Trafficking is basically the charge above simple possession. It doesn't mean he was out driving them around, which he wasn't. He just owned a LOT of drugs. This also happened after he was already gone from WWE, though not by much, just a few weeks. But, the storyline was over and he was no longer employed by them, so it really didn't actively ruin anything. |
