Not to say anything definitive after all of one segment—but what is it about MJF that he instantly becomes more interesting when he’s feuding with his own age group? This was so refreshing.
AEW really have an opportunity here. If they let this go on until Double or Nothing, which they should, flesh out the three challenges. Have Max and Jack forced to team up and kinda like it. Lean in on Darby and Sammy’s history. Really use this to build up everyone.
Also—props to AEW for pulling the trigger on this and not sitting on things, as WWE does.

I wonder if this is the Double or Nothing title match or it it'll happen on TV in the next month. On paper the challengers might not seem "PPV worthy" but if there is another big match on the card (like Elite v BCC blood & guts) they could maybe get away with it. Do it for tv and then you can spin off one of them for a ppv. It's too long for it to go to the ppv unless they get shots separately and MJF weasels his way without actually winning and that builds to the PPV

I don't think it's how it will go, but that'd be my preference.

That'd be an interesting way to run off the time until the PPV and actually have MJF seem like he's in any sort of danger just a little.

I hope they keep the pillars concept but just past it down to newcomers. The second generation of pillars could be Hobbs, Starks, Garcia and OC, the third generation perhaps Hook and three guys we haven’t heard of yet. Maybe a woman’s edition of the pillars. Needn’t be anything official just a reference for commentary and can occasionally be using for a storyline like last nights promo.

Is it weird that I think MJF’s best work comes when he’s reacting to someone else?

Yeah, I’m not a fan of that sort of stuff but I also gladly make an exception considering how much very public social media nonsense there’s been. It's also easy enough to blur kayfabe on that Compared to uttering the phrase "job guy" Yes, but a casual viewer could also understand "job guy" as something like "gofer", "errand boy" like someone who does menial jobs.

Darby killed it but I couldn’t stop focusing on his breathing between words.

I think that was the most captivating segment in AEW since the Muffin Scrum, but this time for all the right reasons.
I was impressed by how well all four played off each other, how they all got their zingers in, and how even someone who lust their luster in the last year (Sammy, of course) felt somewhat captivating again when buffered by Jungle Boy and Darby.
Most importantly, this segment had the exciting aura of early AEW, something that’s faded a bit since Punk debuted, Cody left, and the Brawl Out. Maybe it was the focus on the Pillars, maybe it was how fun and fresh it felt, but I’m instantly on board with the storytelling.

Just seen this, thought it was a really good segment.
All three guys have legitimate angles to play, although Sammy doing a face like promo before having to cheap heat heel it up right after was an odd choice.
The match will be great, whatever happens, 4 way or any 1 of them 1on1, though I dont see any of the 3 dethroning MJF.

Is it weird that I think MJF’s best work comes when he’s reacting to someone else? No, when he's monologing he's all over the place. When he's got someone to focus on he's way better and he sold each of his challengers slightly differently which makes it compelling. I'll always think the lack of interactions between him and Tully in The Pinnacle was a big missed opportunity. Kind of interesting that Sammy has the most sucsss fueding against MJF but he's the one the champion is least worried about.

I just wish the three other guys were given more to do in the last few months. A lukewarm feud with Christian and a TNT reign I forgot about i wrote this, don’t feel like much. Sammy will always feel like Jericho’s lackey at this point.
Kinda reminds me of when they were building up Hangman as the guy and he was the was put in forgettable feuds with Matt Hardy and Brian Cage.

Even if they mainly work in kayfabe it still irritates the shit out of me and discounting their booking of women and white main event scene is my least favourite aspect of their damn show

Though maybe they just do it every time you watch, they just know

Yeah sounds like I’m agreeing with the majority opinion in that I like the setup but too insider for for my liking. I can’t see it as PPV main event though as don’t think any of the challengers have enough momentum
Having said that, match will be a banger I’ve no doubt

Jack and Sammy are similarly so far from a world title win. Maybe Jack’s closer, honestly. But Darby’s had a similar pattern of gaining momentum and getting cooled off. A bunch of times. Darby, I feel, if pushed towards it, would gain momentum and could be the “plucky” AEW world title run. Or maybe something more?
Having said all that, yeah MJF’s not dropping it to any of ‘em anytime soon.
