The first two seasons of Strange New Worlds is better than the first two seasons of any other Trek show except for maybe TOS. I trust in Kurtzman. I'll go so far as to say Strange New Worlds is the best first two seasons of any Star Trek. Period. TOS' first two seasons have some bangers, but a lot of uttter dreck filler as well. The upside of having only ten episodes per season is there's no space for filler. I wouldn't mind three or four more episodes per season, but I'm greedy.

Every single thing Alex Kurtzman touches turns to shit. The near-universally beloved status of Strange New Worlds, Lower Decks, Prodigy and (one-third of) Picard suggests otherwise. Discovery is an uneven mess with as many poor episodes as good, and the first two seasons of Picard wasted good premises, but overall Kurtzman has had more hits in charge of Star Trek than he's had misses. Yes it does! It suggests that differing people hold differing opinions. I see Kurtzman reducing Star Trek down into simple entertainment guaranteed to cause no new thinking. Granted, this has been an issue for Star Trek long before Kurtzman came on the scene. Star Trek is long overdue for an evolution, a step forward, and all it's done is move backwards into safety and worn down tread over ideas.

To be fair, that is quite different from what you originally said. We probably wouldn't have that couple of post discussion if you just said that.

Well that's what a forum is for, discussion and discourse. I stand by both posts, and welcome the opportunity to discuss it with opposing minds. I don't know anyone outside of FAN that I can talk about Star Trek with to the degree I can here.

That's another debate altogether, and still not one I'd necessarily agree with. Still, I'm not quite sure what such an evolution would look like, if I'm honest. After 900+ episodes of TV and 13 movies it's difficult to break new ground without becoming something else entirely... which also tends to be the most common accusation levelled at Kurtzman's Trek by purists.

I remember hearing it levelled at the first season of Discovery and then hearing that the later seasons were going to safe which, like, I can imagine that being a gigantic headache for those involved (combined with other stuff like corporate mandates and literally everything that caused the actors and writers strikes to happen).

I've seen it levelled at every new Trek property since 2009. Trek's "thing" has always been disguising moral, ethical, or philosophical tales as a simple sci-fi show. Perhaps too well-disguised, given the propensity of certain types of people to ask why it's gone woke all of a sudden. Kelvin movies aside, which were more or less straight action movies, it does still do that – albeit sometimes being a bit too on-the-nose – but at least has tried to freshen things up by presenting it in new ways, be it as an adult animated comedy, kid-orientated animated drama, or "prestige"-style serialised seasons. Really, only Strange New Worlds has stuck with the tried-and-tested formula, and has done so with great acclaim from both critics and the fandom.

Anyway….this should literally be Police Academy where citizens are forced to enlist against their will and really shake up the system Just go the whole way and have... A wisecracking Mahoney type human. An android who can imitate sounds. A big Klingon who is really a gentle giant. A soft spoken Vulcan who when provoked has a ferocious temper. A phaser obsessed virgin. An accident prone guy. An ex space gangster who can't speak properly. A sex bomb with enormous tits. A sadistic academy captain. Proctor.

Great! That's what I hoped for and I'm glad that's the case. As much as the debate around Discovery travelling to that period is still up in the air, if you're going to do a new Star Trek show involving new recruits, you might as well put it somewhere that's still trying to reestablish itself after *waves arms around to hide Discovery spoilers* and have it be, for a lack of a better word, a discovery for those involved. I dig it!

Pity it's on Paramount over here but I'd be curious to watch it if I ever had the chance.

I look forward to the post Kurtzman era. I mean, I also look forward to when I don’t enjoy Star Trek anymore. Will save me picking stuff to watch with dinner.

I'm digging the idea here, could be a fun premise. Keep hoping for a Legacy series with Captain Seven of Nine though.
