In The Real Ghostbusters, the movie Ghostbusters exists as a retelling of their story (they even mention the names of Dan Aykroyd, Bill Murray, Harold Ramis, and Ernie Hudson). Does this mean that the movie canon is fiction and the Real Ghostbusters are the true stories of the Ghostbusters?

If the Real Ghostbusters are the real Ghostbusters and the movie is a Hollywood retelling, then Peter and Egon should be asking the studio why they lost their dreamy looks for miserable Bill Murray and lost Harold Ramis.

Look, everybody knows that if you don't have Forrest Tucker and Larry Storch, then you don't have the Ghostbusters. That's just a given.

Ghostbusters, Ghostbusters 2, and GB Afterlife are the only canon IMO.

Does Ray get a blowjob from a ghost in the cartoon? That’s how you know it’s canon. Because bustin makes him feel good.

Same reason IRL but reversed. Hollywood didn't want to pay the Ghostbusters for their likeness so changed them just enough for legal reasons.

As someone who was introduced to the Ghostbusters through the cartoon, it is the true version to me.
First three seasons are surprisingly very good. Along with the first movie and the 2009 video game, it's the only media stuff of Ghostbusters I like. The recent years attempts to bring back the franchise has been laughably bad.

Peter might not care as much because of the implication he got to bang 80s Sigourney Weaver.

Can I go on a rant here? Ghostbusters is one of my favorite movies. I'll watch it any time it's on, no matter how long it's been on, usually because part 2 is up next anyway. But there's two things that bug the shit out of me.
1) The Dean at the college never gets any comeuppance. This could have easily been solved with a small scene during the montage of them showing the Dean paying them for busting some ghost on campus or him covered in slime, anything.
2) They NEVER go back to bust the Librarian Ghost. They run away, start their business and that's that. Once again, this could have just been added to that montage instead of some other random footage of them or that footage that makes Dana look like a lush.
The third small nitpicky thing is when Ray goes "Listen! Do you smell that?" Listen and smell are two entirely different senses, Ray.

Pretty sure the cartoon mentions Gozer at least once, so the movie would be based in at least some “reality” within the show.
What about Ghostbusters II though? Was them being shut down by the city canon?

Was them being shut down by the city canon? The movie producers took greater liberties with the story for the second movie then they did with the first. Janine was particularly mortified by their artistic license.

It's a multiverse! As shown with the IDW Comics that had a storyline called "Get's real" where they meet the Real Ghostbusters.

I like to think that the Slimer! cartoons are an in-universe thing where Slimer was given his own cartoon show (notice how the animation is different for those shorts).

Gozer get mentioned several times as a measuring stick for power in the cartoon canon. It kinda falls into the category Freeza was in in Dragonball for a good long while: "Remember that super-strong threat we fought? Well guess what... they're completely irrelevant. (Thing) is as or many times stronger!"
