I seriously watched that movie and 5 minutes later couldn't tell you a damn thing about it. Someone needs to make a documentary of that movie. A cast littered with A-list actors (for its time) and it's a confusing, incoherent mess and the only actor who seems like they are trying is Sarah-Michelle Gellar. It was just more or less abandoned by Universal. It made $380,000 on a $17m budget |

Obviously this is worse than Southland Tales, that movie was actually good.  (That Richard Kelly dialog...in all seriousness, though, Southland Tales has to be, if nothing else, one of the top 5 most ambitious movies I've ever seen. The scope is off the charts. I'm shocked they let Kelly make this as only his second movie...it's basically mid-90's Oliver Stone auteurism, just full out blank-check wildness. I still don't know how I feel about it, but it's kinda grown on me since it released. It's like the Starfield of movies, and this is coming from someone who likes that game.) |

Today, I have a framed 'Skyscraper' poster in my kitchen and make plans to throw annual 'Skyscraper' parties. 15+ years ago I was in college for cinema studies at NYU and lead an on-campus 'Films of "The Rock"' (this started prior to "Dwayne The Rock Johnson"/"Dwayne Johnson" branding) group who would see his movies in theaters opening day. 'The Gameplan' was a hard sell for the group, but we went and all found it heartwarming and enjoyable - leaving the theater more confident than ever that The Rock could do no wrong. Then, holy shit, 'Southland Tales.' Palpable physical anger in the seats. We were the only ones in the theater (for the first movie where he was billed solely as "Dwayne Johnson") and were just gobsmacked at how bad it was. So much so, we stayed through the credits to even catch the passive aggressive "for more information, read the prequel comics" tacked on at the end. f*** Southland Tales. Roger Ebert's utter decimation of it is a classic essential bad movie reaming - www.rogerebert.com/reviews/southland-tales-2007 |
