Legitimate question. Is there any salvaging this storyline? I thought of Bret Hart/Hulk Hogan but in reverse, but that's not feasible. Either way, this is already a swing-and-a-miss on the level of the Invasion. You'd think what you'd do when your garnering as much bad publicity as you've gotten due to creepo McMahon, you'd want to stay your course as much as possible, despite the Punk injury, and try to put on as good of a flagship show as possible. But naaaaaaah... No. what's the best case scenario? Do a complete 180 and have Rock say " no Cody, I trust you , do this". Still doesn't change the segment of Cody running away

Well…if nothing else, now Cody is getting the full experience his daddy had when it came to dealing with shots at the world title.

Turns out the story needing to be finished was this, apparently!

Cody Rhodes is Jon Snow. The protagonist/hero who was supposed to save everything only for the writers to do something horribly idiotic with them in the final season that ruins it all. Jon did a really good job at staring at the ice dragon, though, while his little sister killed his nemesis, so the writers could subvert expectations. Cody can stare at the Rock and Roman in the main event, too.

Crazy to see this thread jumped 20+ pages in about 2 hours.
And a lot of people probably missed this show too and won't find out the results until tomorrow morning.

But naaaaaaah... I don’t see how it’s salvageable. Best case scenario, Cody wins the title at EC or gets shoehorned into a triple threat match at Mania or something. Either way, he still looks like a complete goober and a year plus of story telling got flushed down the drain for nothing.

Know who else had a big, crowning payoff moment whose can kept getting kicked for years? Roman, funny enough. Denied every chance on match after match to get his win over Brock, left going absolutely nowhere and failing to get anything moving. It left him struggling for years, needing 'his coronation' even after he'd already held the world title, and when it finally happened, it didn't push his career to new heights, it just felt like it was finally over. Roman only finally got that accepted top guy push as a heel completely reinvented from everything they wanted him to be, and in the end the ways that Roman built his legacy have piss-all to do with his Brock matches and his failures to ever get one over here. Except, Brock was the guy being built up at the expense of the whole entire company, and instead of playing the role of kingmaker finally handing it over to Roman, all of the years of energy put into him just kinda fizzled out into pointlessness. He didn't launch Roman to new heights so the ways they fed pretty much everyone to him never really felt worth it. It's an interesting contrast, ain't it? Difference being of course Roman was never getting over as a true face with the crowd, and Cody is the most over face they’ve had since, ironically, The Rock and Austin. Yeah, I don't think Cody's going to have to go heel or anything; my point is that they never actually followed through on their promise despite basically ruining the show to build up the moment, and in the end the big top run that finally paid off was disconnected from it and needed an entirely different magic to happen. There's a 'too long' point where if Roman finally loses to Cody when the audience is already numb to this, it's not going to be as big as it was meant to be, and if the fan response to this is bad enough then it's going to absolutely hurt the moment if/when it finally happens. The worst thing Cody/Roman can be now is an "okay, finally" moment like Roman beating Brock finally was.

9 years ago in Philly wasn't enough for these two that they got to do it again? Hahaha. I really, really hope they have an awful match and get booed out of the arena. It'll be a super slow paced Roman match built on staring and moving slowly. Rock hasn't wrestled an actual match in 11 years at this point (a four second Erick Rowan match where he took no bumps does not count) and he's still only built for movies really.

Really glad I decided to play Persona 3 Reload rather than watch Smackdown. Think I'll go ahead and return to just watching NXT again. Tried to give the main shows a chance again and look what happens lol Thank God we have the booker of the year, Shawn Michaels, to save us from backstage politicians.

Ava is the new NXT GM. - Rock's Daughter
Nia Jax potentially to main event Elimination Chamber. - Rock's Cousin
Roman Reigns undisputed 3+ year title reign. - Rock's Cousin
Jimmy vs. Jey potentially at Wrestlemania 40. - Rock's Cousin's
You know what, they are all doing VERY well right now heading into Wrestlemania.

To be honest at this juncture I don't even care if Cody ever beats Roman or not. I mostly wanted it to happen because Cody was the only person positioned to potentially end the title reign but seeing as that's happened and his character is such a useless spineless blob at this point, whatever. This title reign will never end because the one person they've positioned to do it has been repeatedly shit on.

I know what'll distract people from the Vince news, let's put the Rock in the match.
Minutes later, the entire internet is still talking about the Vince stuff but NOW you have people upset about the product too. A bumbling farting ballet dance of idiocy that'll just turn more people away from drooling and defending the company as a whole. Astoundingly stupid booking especially for the moment.

They’re not going to end Roman’s title reign on a show at 5AM. They’re not going to have Cody second guess it and win money in the bank to get in. It’s over. Anyone else thinking there’s anyway this ends but Roman holding up the title at the end of the show is delusional.

Is it out of the question that Roman could pull double duty?
Defend the Universal title one night, and defend the WWE the other?
