This year, it looks like all three NYC area hockey teams and both NYC basketball teams are going into the playoffs in the same calendar year. Has that ever happened?

It happened at least once in the 1993-94 season. The Knicks and Nets were the 2 and 7 seeds in the NBA's Eastern Conference playoffs. While the Rangers, Devils, and Islanders were the 1, 3, and 8 seeds respectively in the NHL's Eastern Conference playoffs. For an added bit of fun, the Buffalo Sabres were the 6 seed in the East that year, too. So you not only had the three NYC metro area teams in the playoffs, but the three New York State teams, too.
That was also the year the Rangers won the Stanley Cup and the Knicks made it to Game 7 of the NBA Finals. The Devils would win their first Stanley Cup the next year.

I bet WFAN had a field day that year. I knew that the Rangers and Knicks were in their respective finals though.

I know the baseball has just started back up but last season the Mets & Yankees also both made the postseason. Only the Jets letting people down.

Islanders need a win or OT loss against the Habs tonight to ensure this happens.

And the Isles beat the Habs outright and clinched their playoff berth. Good job all New York City-area teams that aren't the Jets.

Some modern history on years where New York metro-area teams made deep playoff runs:
1969-1970 saw the Jets win the Super Bowl ('69), Mets win the World Series ('69), and the Knicks win the NBA title ('70)
1973 had the Knicks win their second title, while the Mets won the National League pennant
1981 had the Islanders winning the Stanley Cup while the Yankees won the American League pennant
1986-1987 saw the Mets win the World Series ('86) while the Giants won their first Super Bowl ('87)
1994 had the Rangers winning the Stanley Cup while the Knicks made the NBA Finals (good chance the Yankees would've had a strong playoff run that year had the strike not happened)
1999-2001 was a doozy - Jets make the AFC title game, Knicks make the NBA Finals ('99), Yankees win the World Series ('99) while the Mets make a pretty legendary playoff run, Devils win the Stanley Cup ('00), Mets win the NL pennant but lose to the Yankees in the World Series ('00), Giants make the Super Bowl ('01), Devils make the Stanley Cup final but come up short ('01), Yankees win another AL pennant ('01)
2003 got the Devils winning their third Stanley Cup, Nets winning the Eastern Conference in the NBA, and the Yankees winning another AL pennant
