Kurt Angle Believes That Some Fans May Lose Interest In WWE

-Kurt Angle believes Roman Reigns should have put over Cody Rhodes to make him a megastar at WrestleMania 39.

Twenty years ago, Kurt Angle competed in the headlining Match of WrestleMania 19 and put over Brock Lesnar in a match that furthered Brock Lesnar's ascension to superstardom. This year at WrestleMania, Roman Reigns defeated Cody Rhodes in the main event in a match everyone believed would help Cody reach new heights as he picked up his first World Championship in WWE.

Kurt Angle has now weighed in on the end of WrestleMania 39 as he said on the most recent episode of his podcast that he believes Roman Reigns should have put over "The American Nightmare."



"I'm not going to beat up on Roman Reigns because he is the man he deserves to be," said Kurt. "We're in a time now where if you're a champion for three years, that's a little long. It's just too long. Because we're not in territories anymore. When you were in territories, you weren't on TV every week. So fans had to come to see you at the arenas, and you'd only be in that city one day a week. So they only saw wrestling one day a week back then when they were champion for six, eight years. Now Roman Reigns has gone on; it looks like he's gonna have to hold the title for another few years. The thing is, he's on TV every week, sometimes twice a week, and then you know, a pay-per-view every month. It's just a lot. I don't believe the ratings are gonna go down, but I do believe some people are going to lose interest because they're not making other wrestlers. You know, Roman has an opportunity to make a wrestler, he could have made Cody into a megastar, which Cody is already a star, but he would have been a mega-star if he won at WrestleMania. That's just my opinion."



Furthermore, Angle would joke that they might as well let Roman Reigns break Bruno Sammartino's record if they're going to keep going with him. While Roman Reigns is far from that record, he will hold the WWE Universal Championship for 1,000 days if he makes it to WWE King and Queen of the Ring in Saudi Arabia with his championship intact.

The Wrestletalk people kind of summed it up best. There really wasn’t a single segment on SD last night where it felt like anything progressed since Mania.

It feels like Mania resolved nothing and everyone is just still doing what they did before. And The Bloodline stuff was the most egregious example of this.

It just feels like the WM39 finish was such a colossal failure that across the board of wrestling you have people pointing it out with WWE just shrugging and going "Well guess what, Roman's on vacay again but Jey might leave the Bloodline for real this time!!!!!!" Like within the week it already feels like it's cemented its place as a major wrestling f*** up of all time, and I can't imagine time passing will help it at all.

Super salient words from Kurt. I think a lot of older guys in the business get it, and they look at how WWE does it these days and they don't really get why it's being done that way. They see the stuff done for them to make them stars, or the stuff they did to make other guys stars, and see it just not happening nowadays. WHich would be fine if this new way was going well and they could say "Well no this is more effectively build our new generation of stars to be even bigger" but they aren't. They aren't, and it stands out that there's star potential being left on the table with these decisions.

Everything Kurt said there is the exact opposite of what people complain about Roman’s reign. He’s never on TV, live events and he’s not defending the title on every single show.

I get people are wanting change and disappointed Cody didn’t win, but what Kurt is saying here, besides it’s been a long reign, just isn’t true.

Not that I wanted it in TNA, but it would have been nice if Kurt had a long run with the title in WWE at one point. Unfortunately, he was never going to get it due to just who he was surrounded by at the time.

WWE can easily keep someone champion for as long as they want nowadays. The brand is the draw, and the company isn't making megastars like they did back when it mattered. If you win the World title nowadays, you could easily see yourself wrestling for midcard titles in 6 months from then with zero build. That's just the nature of what WWE is now.

They used The Rock to cement Brock Lesnar.

They used Triple H to cement Batista.

Etc.

Yeah really, the longer this has been let to sit and fester, with the following shows doing absolutely nothing to alleviate or calm fans down, this really just looks like one of the worst booking decisions in a long time and one of the worst, most baffling Mania endings you could have done. Like it's actively brought everything down with it and it shows

Owens and Zayn screaming that THE BLOODLINE IS CRUMBLING like 10 times on Smackdown just for Jey to almost turn but then kill Sami again was just...  awful. An awful dragging bore that only continues to show how much Cody not winning has absolutely made everything fall apart.

I don't know that it really did anything in the long term, but I liked that they seemed to be at least trying to play that game with Cena too, when he was doing the US belt open challenge thing. They do still know how to do it, I think, they're just actively choosing not to. Which makes it even more infuriating.

That fan is me. I watched more WWE from November through Wrestlemania than I watched in 5-10 years. When Roman won, it was deflating. Watched some of Raw and half of Smackdown and realized they don’t have some grand plan to end the Bloodline; there is no plan at all. I have a similar feeling as I had after SuperBrawl 1999 when the newly reformed NWO won every match they were in. After that, I didn’t really care what direction the story went in. I never watched WCW with any sort of consistency ever again after that.
