You know, I wonder if they don't have AJ win as a way to split him and the OC They needed to get him away from The OC the second I heard AJ say, "Brother me softly" last week. The OC were rehired solely to make AJ Styles happy. He was very angry when they were fired the last time. And he got them back as his personal back-up. AJ would put his foot down on splitting them up.

So this is my impression as someone who has no knowledge of any current angles or pushes, having stopped watching about 2 years ago.
They introduced a new belt because they painted themselves into a corner with Roman and need something for people to fight over.
The belt looked pretty bad and from how it reads comes off as the "2nd place" "Participation Ribbon" title. It seems many of the fans agree.
Paul Heyman buried the belt on Twitter, before the tournament to crown a winner even started.
Cody after losing an enormous amount of steam by losing at WM, Is now as I understand, in a feud with Brock Lesnar where he was beaten down for 15 minutes.
He is also in this tournament, Only two outcomes can happen here; A: He wins a title with no history, or prestige and comes off as the best of scrubs Roman beat or B: He loses the tournament for the aforementioned lesser title making him look like he can't even win second place.
So I ask; What is the positive here? What about this would make me go "Yeah I should watch this tournament"? Seth nasal laughing as he wins the thing?

To fill in a couple of gaps for you: *Rhodes actually beat Lesnar clean at Backlash. Not definitively clean with a finisher, but not flukey like a roll up. Bloodied him too. Which then leads to… *Rhodes is already out of the tournament because of Lesnar interfering as a result of that loss, leading to a rematch in Saudi. Finn Balor pinned The Miz in their triple threat match to advance (eventually losing to Seth Rollins who will fight AJ Styles for the new belt), so Rhodes wasn’t involved in the fall

It very much may be treated like the equivalent of the other title. One world champion on Smackdown, one on Raw.

Yes, he does The Universal title has not been retired And until it does, this is the third world title between two shows, and even if it does get retired, it's still the consolation prize because Roman won't lose.

One world champion on Smackdown, one on Raw. Doesn't Roman still have two titles? He does hold two title belts but all indications are that they are now one title and will be defended as one title moving forward. The website’s roster page now has him listed as only Undisputed Universal WWE Champion whereas he used to be listed twice as each champion. The only reason they haven’t fully integrated them yet is likely because the length of his reign is premised on the Universal title, which is the one that will be subsumed by the WWE title lineage.

You were being generous. Not even crowned, and that title is gonna be 24/7 Title status by the time Paul and Roman are done. Stuff like this really solidifies how far Heyman's fallen away from being the great obvious mind who can 'fix everything'. Like, obviously he never was and benefited from a mixture of mythologizing and knowing the right things to say to carry on well beyond his sell-by date. But he's not even trying any more to pretend to care about making things that aren't his act look good. He knows this is a shit move but he doesn't care anymore because he's puffing up Roman because he's fortunatey enough to have his hooks into Roman hwich is keeping him big time important. which is funny cause he's... kinda one of hte least important parts of Roman's whole act?

I’ve always seen him as pretty essential to Roman’s heel act. Roman just being with Heyman is what got him over as being actually a heel at the start. He cuts killer promos to build up most of Roman’s programs. And now that Roman is part-time, he’s even more essential as he builds up feuds with Roman’s future opponents without Roman needing to be there (like the great promos he and Cody cut on each other in the Mania build).

Styles is nice, but I kinda wish Lashley was in the finals or even wins the title to become the first ever champion. No mid card titles work for him anymore as I see them as way below him. At this point in his career, if he's carrying a belt, only a world title matters to him.

I love that AJ is just plain ole saying the quiet part loud.
This is a consilation prize and everyone from AJ to Cody to Seth know it.
All this because this company refused to have Cody win the damn titles at Mania.

AJ is in Randy Orton-esque “say out loud what everyone is thinking because IDGAF” mode.

Has he just Luger-at-Mania-10ed himself out of winning it?

Amazing AJ finally said something intelligent in an interview and it had to be that.

It reads like one of those weird half-kayfabe, half-shoot interviews wrestlers love to give.

I mean the belt exists literally because they put two on Roman and after almost four years still refuse to let ANYONE pin him even ONCE!
How can it not feel second-rate?
