I understand what they’re going for now, but I think the days of them wrestling for draft picks that were then “randomly” picked from the other side made for more exciting draft shows.

All I have to add here is that when I was really young, like 5 or 6, I thought the NFL and NBA drafts I was always hearing about worked just like a draft for the military.
For a short time, I was really worried that when I grew up, I might get drafted and have to play sports.

Didn't this happen with cena where he was drafted and then drafted back? Or am I misremembering that Yeah, he was feuding with Miz and got drafted to Smackdown and Miz mocked him that he wouldn't be able to challenge him anymore.
Then in the last match of the night, Mark Henry beats him down and costs him the match to let Raw get the last pick and he was drafted back to Raw.

The Draft is lame. I miss the days where that at least tried to pretend it was randomly picked so they did Raw vs SD matches all show and the winning brand got a random star from the other show. Led to the hilarity of Eric Bischoff losing his shit over Triple H going to SD and deciding he’s worth a Booker T and the Dudleyz to get him back. The year that happened (2004), the Draft was just Heyman with a hopper of Raw names and Bischoff with a hopper of Smackdown names. They drew people at random the same way wrestlers pick a number for the Royal Rumble.
