This is something I had noticed in the past few years whenever there is a draft. Say when someone is already on Raw and the person is drafted to Raw, why is it like that? I think it's kind of pointless to say they are drafted if they are staying on that show. I mean back in the 2000s or even in the mid-to-late-2010s (the newer brand split started in 2016), I don't think it was announced that someone on Smackdown would be drafted to Smackdown. Back in the 2000s, at least, any draft pick meant the person was going to the other show.
What are your thoughts on this?

I think the point is to reserve them for your show. Instead of claiming a new star, you use that pick to keep a valuable star on your show. It makes perfect sense, although I agree they should call it something else.

The executives in the room want to keep that wrestle on their show.
Speaking of which does anyone have the gif of the draft room losing their shit when they drafted Natalya? Hilarious stuff.

The 2000s draft setup was wayyy better. Obviously Roman Reigns is gonna be the #1 pick. But back then you can have something like HHH being the final pick going to Smackdown or Rey as the first pick going to Raw

Under the current rules of the Draft where "everyone is up for grabs," it's necessary. Otherwise, you'd just be moving the entire Smackdown roster to Raw and the entire Raw roster to Smackdown. I think they just believe "the entire roster is available to drafted!" makes the Draft sound more exciting than if they had to market it as "each show gets (insert number) picks."

I think they should do the draft like picking teams for dodgeball. You line up everyone and Raw and Smackdown take turns picking. Like on the Simpsons baseball episode: youtu.be/qNOiWsq6JrsThat way you can have a humiliated character that gets picked last (probably Baron Corbin)

It got him over, too. The whole "I have kids, I need this job" really struck a chord with people.

My idea for how to do the draft and make it sensible but exciting:
Announce the draft the night after Mania for say, mid-May or early-June. In the lead up, the networks send representatives to both shows in order to lock in certain talent. Doesn't have to be every show, but have the networks have a vested interest in certain talent. FOX sees that Riddle is really over, for example, so they send people to Raw to woo him, while USA wants to keep him. You could even do this on NXT, like Tiffany Stratton says both FOX and USA have been calling her so much, she had turn her phone off.
At the draft, you start off with the announcement of who has renewed their deal to stay on the show they're on. Then, the rest of the night, you have people repping for the networks making picks from whoever's left, along with allowing each network a set amount of NXT picks. And have the talent picked react. Corbin's happy to be back on FOX, maybe Aliyah feels unappreciated on USA. Make it matter more than just at Survivor Series, and it might actually mean something.

Slater actually wasn't picked, period. Axel was the last pick on Raw and they tried to push him as "Mr. Irrelevant" for like, a week, before they didn't even use him on the main show.

In fantasy sports you have a yearly draft. Just because you had someone last year doesn't mean you'll have them this year unless you draft them before someone else. It's the same concept.

I both get it but also think it makes the draft worse to watch. I prefer the random aspect of the original years.

It would make more sense if each brand essentially had the other brand's roster to select from.
It doesn't need to be one big pot to pull from.

It all gets muddled by the fact that they don’t it patently clear that all the talents are deemed free agents for the purpose of the draft, and that the split itself got muddled again in the last year or so.

The Draft is lame. I miss the days where that at least tried to pretend it was randomly picked so they did Raw vs SD matches all show and the winning brand got a random star from the other show. Led to the hilarity of Eric Bischoff losing his shit over Triple H going to SD and deciding he’s worth a Booker T and the Dudleyz to get him back.
