Episode 1 is kinda a history of wrestling from its carny history and finishes off talking about Fritz Von Erich and how he f***ed up his kids. A genuinely jarring story to listen to, even having known most of what they were going to say from seeing the Von Erich Family episode of Dark Side of the Ring. And that was just the appetizer, to a SIX course meal. As we went from the birth of "sports entertainment" and the founding of NWA to the Von Erich tragedies, I found myself paraphrasing Dan Olson: It's a bit of a hike from here to Vince McMahon, so I guess get ready for that. Strap in.

Part 2 has dropped and was talking about Vince's childhood up until age 17 with two stories about Dr. Jerry Graham who was the hero of teenage Vince.

The Stern/Playboy stuff was rough, not even Vince deserves casual cruelty about childhood trauma.

Now that's a (probably racist) man who can throw Puerto Ricans like potatoes.

Kind of weird how Vince grew up around and idolising wrestlers who were as wide as they are tall with working, rather than decorative muscle that could shoot throw people like they were stuffed with newspaper, and go on to punish the ones under his employ for not looking like Superman 365 days a year Also, a fully grown Toots Mondt is what I imagine Brock Lesnar's kids look like as newborn babies. Unsettlingly muscular giant baby.

His treatment of the kliq makes a whole lot more sense with this breakdown of his background, idolising the hard drinking, musclecar driving Dr. jerry Graham, as well as being a bit of an awkward poser as a kid. He absolutely would have ridden their coattails were they around in his dad's day.

Part three's up.
I keep meaning to listen to these but kind of waiting for the whole thing to go up.

I did not know that Gene Lebel was supposed to gig Muhammad Ali during that match with Inoki.

One of the craziest damn things I've ever heard We only just got to Vince buying the WWWF at the end of episode 3, and so much of it already sounds like a fever dream. That whole Ali and Inoki in Japan episode could be it's own made for Netflix movie.

My favourite thing in learning the extent to what a serial liar Vince is. Like, I knew he typically lied, but I never really appreciated the extent to which he lies about basically everything.
Also gotta love the story about his old friends getting on his back about cheating on Linda too much.

I remember hearing in like 2006/2007 he loved Fit Finlay matches more than anyone in the company but he loved money more. You could tell on commentary he absolutely adored Bret Hart & HBK matches.

Makes sense. Cena in a lot of ways was a spiritual successor to Sammartino but with some showmanship. I'm pretty sure Vince eventually realised he could actually push Daniel Bryan and the larger section of the crowd would actually like it.

Part four was harrowing, I will not shed any tears when Vince finally succumbs to the long term effect of the steroids he pushed onto his talent.

Between Andre, Rita Chatterton, and Nancy Argentino alone, Vince McMahon ain't seeing Heaven. Crazy to think this is only episode four of six, and we haven't even left the 80s.

Between Andre, Rita Chatterton, and Nancy Argentino alone, Vince McMahon ain't seeing Heaven. Crazy to think this is only episode four of six, and we haven't even left the 80s. What did he do to Andre? He treated Andre like a greyhound, worked him continually through the early 80s, had him travel continually as his body fell apart then made him spend most of his final days as an active wrestler as a heel when he was utterly miserable being booed, in constant pain and getting pummeled by clods in his fragile state. Seriously, he needed to be handled like he was made of glass when filming the Pricess Bride because of his condition and Vince still had him work with Warrior after his health had deteriorated even further rather than just turning him face and letting him go out a hero in his final run of passable matches. Andre was also close to Rita Chatterton and one of the few people she was close to backstage so he went to his grave hating Vince.
