About ten years ago Shaun Ryder from the Happy Mondays moved to the outskirts of Manchester for some peace and quiet...only to unwittingly and unknowingly move next door to former band mate Bez.

Ducky from NCIS wrote one of if not the most famous samples in rap history. My mind is blown. Had no idea.

That legitimately sounds like a sitcom premise. I thought the same; it’s also the sort of thing that could only happen to Shaun Ryder.

To briefly indulge my special interest, Jim Steinman had a habit of repurposing his music if it hadn't really caught on in the way that he liked, and some of the original versions are... Pretty unexpected. - Dead Ringer For Love with Meatloaf and Cher? Started as a theme for a Animal House TV spinoff. - Air Supply's Making Love Out Of Nothing At All? Originally used in the soundtrack of Vietnam war movie A Small Circle Of Friends.- Total Eclipse Of The Heart is also a major motif in the above movie, but was written a little earlier for the 1969 musical The Dream Engine- And that iconic opening for Holding Out For A Hero? Originated in a totally different song for his one (sadly unsuccessful) solo album. --- Also, a lot of people only know 90s band Babylon Zoo for one song, Spaceman, but their second album is a hidden gem of glam rock, and the lead single 'All The Money's Gone' even has a cheesy as hell animated music video that seems to be aiming somewhere between X-Men and Mortal Kombat: Defenders Of The Realm. I love it.

I'm still sort of disappointed that the one and only time I ever saw the Vandals, he wasn't playing with them. The GNR lineup with him was nuts though looking back at it, I'm fairly sure Tommy Stinson from the Replacements was the bassist in it. I kind of love the story about the Dinosaur Jr. cover of "Just Like Heaven" by the Cure, where the tape snapped and cut off the end, but they reckoned it was the best take they'd done so just kept it, and still finish the song at that point when they play it live.

I love the fact The Beatles had a drummer called Pete Best who got kicked out the band before they got famous, and then released an album called Best Of The Beatles

Some guy whose name I don’t recall turned down the Beatles telling them “Guitar groups are on their way out”. He missed the Beatles and the world from 1963-2002. At the very least.

The origin story of Porcupine Tree.
The name came from Steven Wilson and a friend in high school, they both liked 70's British prog bands with odd names like Jethro Tull, Mabel Greer's Toyshop, Gandalf's Fist, Hatfield and The North, Van Der Graaf Generator and so on. They created a silly name and wrote up a phony history of the band, including a few snippets of music.
Years later, Wilson had earned enough money as part of the duo No-Man to buy a place in the country and set up his own small studio. He started writing more music for Porcupine Tree and recorded an 80-minute cassette that he started sharing with others in the music industry. Some of the music was put on to a free cassette packaged with a prog-rock music fan magazine, with a plea to anyone who had heard of this 'mystery band'.
After a while, Wilson owned up to the joke and continued with the music.
Doesn't it sound like the plot of a horror movie? Creating an urban legend, then as more people talk about it, 'it' gains power and takes on a life of it's own?

I often wonder if Queen have ever attempted legal recourse over this, this astonishingly blatant.

Some guy whose name I don’t recall turned down the Beatles telling them “Guitar groups are on their way out”. He missed the Beatles and the world from 1963-2002. At the very least. His name was Dick Rowe and he worked for Decca Records and although he turned down The Beatles he went on to sign The Rolling Stones. As well as Small Faces, The Tremeloes, Cat Stevens, The Moody Blues, Ton Jones and many others. I’ve made this argument before but I do think if The Beatles had signed with Decca, then they wouldn’t have become the most successful band ever. Going with EMI instead brought in George Martin and while I have no doubt that without George Martin The Beatles would have been a great band, I don’t think they would have become the greatest band.
