Yes folks, its been a full decade since Microsoft revealed the Xbox One, a console which definitely became the talk at the water cooler... for all the wrong reasons. TV! Live sports! TV! {Spoiler}{Spoiler}video games... The Kinect! TV! I mean I wasn't in tuned to a lot of the mainstream gaming scene at the time, but even I recall how big a disaster this was. The always online requirement was a PR nightmare and the proposed fee for playing used games of course produced the most brutal Sony takedown since the $299 announcement at the 1995 E3: Derek from Stop Skeletons From Fighting has far more detail about this, but yeah this effectively crippled the Xbox brand, and it still has yet to recover.

I don’t think there’s ever been an example of a company taking an early victory lap as that Sony press conference. They didn’t need to say many things at all, just say they weren’t doing the stuff Microsoft was doing.
It was also Jack Tretton’s last E3 and I always remember he did an interview with Geoff Keighley where he was given a microphone to drop except he chucked it right off the balcony they were on in the interview and if there was a moment that embodied his time running Sony CE America…

I dont think I've ever heard the word "TV" mentioned so much for something about video games as I did in that one announcement.

This era is why I always roll my eyes at people applauding MS for it's "consumer friendliness".
Microsoft got as big as it did in the 360 generation because Sony thought people would buy a $600 for a console because it had the word Playstation on it.
Then Sony started losing bad and responded by making PS+, offering free online all thoughtout PS3s life cycle, basically giving away PS Vita's biggest games, and offering crossbuy with Vita and PS3 games.
Then MS imploded, PS4/XB0 generation happened, and MS put out Gamepass, day and date MS published PC releases, and backwards compatibility.
Companies are always consumer friendly when they're losing.

The only thing more embarrassing than the Xbox One's E3 reveal presser was the PlayStation 3's E3 reveal presser. Both for very similar reasons.
Always amazes me that when a previous generation console does really well, the company, whether that's Nintendo, Sony, or Microsoft, gets arrogant and shits away all that goodwill built up with the next generation. And they act surprised when it backfires and hurts their bottom line despite all the examples of it happening before to their competitors.

Don't forget the Wii U's E3 reveal presser "Look at this controller! It's an amazing controller with a screen! You can do so many things with this controller!" "Is it a new console or just a Wii add-on?" " it's a console. "But look at this controller!"

It's funny, if you aren't interested in keeping up with the latest in gaming, what reputations you find out things have
I had totally forgotten about all the controversy around the 'Bone. I didn't buy one until Fallout 4, and have had the same one ever since operating as my main media hub and of course for gaming. It's great!

I remember thinking the stuff was cool but also came away wondering why there was so much discussion about TV/Media on a gaming system. All that stuff is nice to have, but I care more about gaming. I eventually got a One S, but it was late in the generation. I was very much a PS4 guy in the last generation. I now have a Series X and love it. I might eventually get a PS5, but for now I'm happy.

I remember they tried to push Kinect being required, then sales figures came in and surprise! Suddenly it's not required anymore. Man, I had forgotten just how many missteps they made with the xbone.

Sony mostly won that gen because Nintendo and Microsoft both burst into flames at the starting line.

It's every 3 consoles: Nintendo: NES: Good SNES: Great N64: Uhhh Gamecube: Good Wii: Great Wii U: Uhhh Switch: Great Sega: Master System: okay Megadrive: Great Saturn: kinda bad Dreamcast: Good Sony: PS1: Great PS2: Great PS3: Uhhh PS4: Great PS5: Great MS Xbox: Fine 360: Great One: Uhhhh Series X/S: Great So look for PS6 to shit the bed. ETA: I'm not saying that any of the consoles were bad per se, just that they were mis-steps. All consoles have good points and bad points. 360s dying due to dodgy solder, N64s classic games.

This was Microsoft's "$599 US Dollars". Much like the PS2, the 360 was by far more ahead than the PS3 and felt like they were too big to fail. At least Sony's 2006 show was funny for the wrong reasons and at least showed some hype games like the next Gran Turismo and Metal Gear Solid 4. Microsoft legit saw things like strict DRM, always had to be online, and the Kinect pretty much spying on you at all times and said "Yeah gamers want this". They did 180 a ton of this but honestly the damage was done at this point. This was a prime example of Sony winning a console generation in the first quarter.

The more interesting part was in the detail later. They were going to allow trading in and re-selling but only at authorised retailers who would activate and deactivate keys accordingly.
How they were planning on putting such a system in place in a very short period of time remains a mystery. As does the legalities of setting up a cartel like that (at least in countries with EU law).

It was actually before the XB0 that Microsoft started losing. The 360 became a Kinect machine around the time the PS3 was hitting it's stride and actually sold less than the PS3 in the end.

When you had exclusives like Uncharted 3, Infamous, The Last of Us, God of War series, Heavy Rain, etc Microsoft didn’t really have the diversity outside of Kinect
