I soured by the passing of Ray Steve Don. I can’t be the only fan if this show on here. For as short lived as it was, it really was one of the most addicting shows I’ve ever watched. The writing dvd casting were near flawless. And it’s Putin’s Lou about as close to how it really looked in those times as we are ever going get. The second season was definitely more hectic than the first but was still marvelously good. My favorite karts wee actually the talking, the plotting and political intrigue, over the action sequences. Who wise is ready to join the 13th?

I really enjoyed it, but I also understood why it wasn't successful.
To me it felt a lot like the show was just sharing a lot of cool stuff with viewers without ever having a real force driving the narrative. The characters develop over the episodes, but they don't have a ton to do with each other, and the show spends a lot of time before it even shows us the general connections.
It's still absolutely worth the watch, but I think the scripts were a couple drafts and a strong show runner away from really achieving greatness.

I could watch the first season and everything after through Philippi on loop all day. At the time, several of the greatest actors in the world were working on this show, Ray among them. Despite the liberties it takes, it paints the events around Caesar's rebellion and assassination with such sincerity that it gives the show a rich integrity. Using Pullo and Vorenus as the main POV characters is a great choice, and only made better by Ray Stevenson and Kevin McKidd's chemistry. They're unforgettable, and I hope Ray was proud of it to the end of his days. It also obviously anticipates Game of Thrones in many ways, and GRRM was actually an enormous fan of Rome. He was devastated when it was canceled, and I'm sure it factored into his decision to give HBO the green light to his work. I've often wished HBO had considered revisiting it after the success of GOT.
