Well, ladies and gentlemen, reboots are all the rage these days (at least with studios) so it was only a matter of time before this happened. But seriously, I've been wanting to bring this back, albeit in a somewhat different format, but I'll get to that in a moment. So yeah, I'm making this thread to gauge interest and to brainstorm ideas with you for now, so don't start sending in requests!
First, for those of you who weren't around at the time and may be wondering what the flippin' heck I'm going on about, you might wanna take a look at this old thread: officialfan.proboards.com/thread/495104/great-ssnakebite-movie-experiment?page=1
See, back in 2014, I wanted to expand my cinematic culture, and so I asked the good people of these forums to suggest movies for me to watch, in the order in which they came in, and I would then write a short and hopefully humorous review. It was in my opinion a great success. I thought to myself that I'd be happy if I could get 10 people to check the thread regularly, well I get about a dozen requests pretty much on the first day. On top of that, it really succeeded in making me watch films that, for the most part, I would never gone out of my way to see. I'm very glad I did get to see them as well as most of them were great and even the ones I didn't like, I am happy that I got to see them as that's part of the experience and they did, in their own way, help refine my tastes, I think. All in all, I am very grateful for every person who participated, so I'd like to give this another go.
Now, as mentioned above, I've got some ideas for a new format, and I'd like your input on how you guys feel about it:
First is that I've been considering turning it into a kind of video podcast. It wouldn't be typical video reviews in that I wouldn't use clips to either react to, analyze or illustrate a point; in fact, I want to avoid using cioyrighted material. It would still be me reviewing movies the same way I used to back in the days, just in audio format, the idea being to capture my opinions as raw as possible (although I would still edit out akward pauses and stuff like that. I do have SOME standards ). It's very much intended to be the listenable kind of work, and maybe I'll make some illustration or something related to the movie for visual interest. I'm also thinking I could at least do a few of those as a test and if it doesn't work, go back to written reviews. Do you guys think it'd work?
Second, one problem that did arise with the original Great SsnakeBite Movie Experiment, and one that you can still see when checking the old thread, is that it kind of fell victim to its own success and started accumulating a very sizeable backlog. To alleviate this, I was thinking of usig a system where I would open 10 slots, first come, first served and once they are all taken, they are locked and won't reopen until all 10 films have been reviewed. And of course, only one slot per user in order to avoid the same people being over-represented, as variety is the entire point of the Experiment. Again, I'd like to hear your thoughts on that. Do you think it'd work? Are 10 slots enough? Are they too much?
And last but not least, while it probably won't happen right away I would like to eventually monetize it in some way. I'm not gonna lie, I could use an extra source of income, and doing so with something I actually enjoy and would be motivated to keep doing would be a blast. Now, I don't want to do so directly through YouTube because frankly, their monetization rules seem to change on a weekly basis and devined through gyromancy. So, I would like to go the crowdfunding route. Now, I already have a pretty decent idea of how I could make it work in a way that remains accessible and I want to make it clear that I still intend to publish the reviews for free, I'm not gonna gate them behind a paywall; it'd just be a way to support me and the Experiment, but I'd like to go into greater detail about that and discuss it with you later. And I want to reiterate don't intend to monetize it right off the bat, I'd like to get a good feel of the direction I want to take the reboot Experiment first; plus I'd also like to clarify with the mods how they feel about this sort of thing. Again, I'd really like you guys' input on how you feel about it and if you have any suggestions in that regard.
So there you have it. I hope you guys are as excited as I am to potentially see the Great SsnakeBite Movie Experiment back and I look forward to reading what you have to say.
