youtu.be/PgjVu3VNEN0So I sometimes forget I am way way older than lots of this forum. After seeing a few mistake Adrian Street for Goldust I figured a Adrian Street thread might be needed. As a kid he wass just that odd acting but tough as shit dude I would see all over the southern promotions. Years later I learn that Adrian and his wife made gear for so many wrestlers in the Gulf Coast region.

Towards the end of the WWE Network days, they had a short but nicely done doc on Street. He was just so far ahead of his time, truly got every single aspect of pro wrestling. And the man himself viewed his career with nothing but fondness, he’d didn’t bitter about “never getting a break” or not being as well-known as he should be.

I think it is on Peacock.

He should've been a bigger star. He was just a bit small and the gimmick was too controversial for the time.

What still surprises me is how Adrian became a face in the rural deep south. With the gimmick he was using that is just mind boggling.

What still surprises me is how Adrian became a face in the rural deep south. With the gimmick he was using that is just mind boggling. Without getting too far down the rabbit hole on it…I’ve found that wrestling fans (and horror fans) to be the top two fandoms that accept people who look or act different from them. I have a theory that it’s because if your favorite thing is wrestling…you like people whose favorite thing is wrestling. You don’t care who they are because you have the most important thing in common. Despite being painted with a narrative of being a fake sport watched by idiots and rednecks…it’s second only to horror fans in where I’ve seen people support minorities, women, gays, trans wrestler…whatever you’ve got. Are there loud vocal people who hate everyone? Sure. But compare it to Star Wars having a female jedi as the lead…see what it does to those people. Wrestling fans largely will like you if you work hard, entertain, and care about what they love.

One of my two favorite "old school" (born in 1988 here) wrestlers, alongside The Spoiler. Great wrestler, great character, easily a legend.

Bad news I'm afraid. The great Adrian Street has died. He survived cancer and heart issues but complications from a stroke saw him off. He was 82.
His legacy should be fighting prejudices by deconstructing old tired anti-gay tropes, or his activism, or even, iirc, being one of the first (the first?) interracial gay kisses shown on US TV.
But I guess "beating the shit out of Jimmy Savile for being a creep" is right up there, too.

Very nice write up here www.bbc.com/news/uk-wales-66361848This is definitely one of the best wrestling pictures ever I first became aware of him in around 2000 when I was looking for backyard wrestling gear, and found his "Bizarre Bazaar" wrestling gear shop

I haven't seen a lot of his work but I know many people have spoken highly of his talent and how he wasn't afraid to be different from his peers. It sounds like he was a good person, as well. RIP "Exotic" Adrian Street.

RIP
If you're unfamiliar with Street or want to relive one of this best matches - find his work with Randy Savage from 84-85, my all time favorite non-WWF/WCW Randy Savage matches. Amazing chemistry between the two.

RIP, he'll be dearly missed. Hell of a performer, a fascinating career and a good person by all accounts I've heard.
Also I really hope there's no embellishment whatsoever to the Saville story and that Street did indeed enact some overdue karma on a guy who otherwise seemed to live a consequences-free existence as a monster.

I knew that the last 3 or 4 generations of wrestlers in my area knew Street. But seeing how many of them got trained by him, bought gear off him and it is stunning.
Might have to dig out that Best of Adrian Street comp I got off tazrulez420 at hotmail dot com in 99.
