I played my whole life with a neck guard. I started playing right after Malarchuk got cut, so it's always been apart of my life. I'm sure technology has come a long ways from 1988 to 2023, but players just don't wear it. There has to be a cut proof turtleneck guys could be wearing. Even in recent years goalies have stopped wearing the neck shield, no idea why. Neck guards weren't part of the provided equipment where I played, and local sports stores didn't really carry hockey gear in the mid-'90s, hence me bailing after my first cut. I wouldn't be surprised if this leads to neck guards becoming mandatory (or that rule being rigidly enforced, if it already exists), at least here in the U.K.

Yeah, neck guards with BNQ certification have been mandatory for kids playing up until junior here in Canada since 1990. What is BNQ??? No damn idea. But from 1988-90, you might be able to find one without it....but by 90 for sure, you damn well better have one, or you'd get tossed from the game.

Turns out the EIHA, which was the only regulatory body to exist in England in the '90s, didn't make it mandatory for under-20s to wear neck guards until February of this year, and neck guards for younger ages don't appear to have become mandatory until the early-'00s. Of course, the games I played in were organised by the local ice rink and were almost certainly not affiliated with any regulatory body, so there's that also.

That story is nightmare fuel, absolutely horrendous to hear.
I guess on the lighter side, I did think that Edmonton and Calgary had some pretty nice jerseys and overall kits for the Heritage Classic last night.
And on the even lighter side, this got me off guard:

After a bit of a rough start to the season, Devils have been playing winning hockey, which is good to see.
Metro division top 3 is currently Rangers, Devils, Islanders in that order. Could be a lot of fun in the area if all three teams stay around those positions. Though I am expecting Carolina to start asserting itself again.

As a San Jose Sharks fan, I'm enjoying the winless run here. I knew we'd suck & it gives me something to strive for (to have the longest winless streak to start the season in the NHL) because Dear God, we're not going to accomplish anything else so accept the Schadenfreude.
Just gonna keep singing the "We're F***ing Sh**" song that Liverpool fans sang because that's how insane I am right now.

Way too early to be saying anything for certain, of course, but a little over 10% of the way through and you've got Boston and Vegas dominating, plus Vancouver and Arizona in playoff positions, go figure. In the Atlantic, I'm curious if Boston will level off: the lack of center depth has to bite them at some point, doesn't it? The rest of the division seems like a jumble right now; Ottawa's off to a flat start, yet if they win their next two they'd be right alongside the top of the non-Bruins pack. Hard to see Montreal holding on too long, also hard to see Toronto not going on a tear at some point. The Metro is curious; the Devils might have legitimate goaltending issues, or it might just be some early season adjustments to some new defensemen and combinations in front of them, but meantime their powerplay is now clicking around 45% success, which is so far beyond everyone else that it's kind of staggering, and the league has to adjust at some point. The Islanders seem to be riding their goaltending to wins, but hey, no rule saying you can't do that, while the Rangers are playing a more complete game than they've shown in most recent years, which I'm curious to see if they can stick to moving forward. Carolina has to make a move sooner than later, you'd think. As for out west, I think Dallas vs. Vegas remains the marquee endgame matchup, but I think the Avalanche are back in form, and if the Canucks are for real it'd arguably be the story of the year. Blackwood stopped 10 of 14 shots he faced, and that made him San Jose's most effective goalie of that game. Ye gods.

Is Sorokin the most over rated goalie, I mean can't you hold a 3 goal lead, and can at least will a team to victory in Overtime and Shotouts, god help us he always melts in high leverage spots.

The Sharks are kinda bad right now. They've given up 10(!) goals in each of their last two games and have been outscored 20-3 total in those two games. TWENTY TO THREE!!!!!

Couldn’t catch the Stars game last night but it couldn’t have been any worse than the night the Sharks had. Maybe it’s time to ship them off to the minor leagues.

Like, holy shit, is it possible for the Sharks to be Relegated? If it’s any consolation, they have a ways to go to be the worst team ever…for now.

Brutal missed call in the Oilers Canucks game to make it 3-2. Refs make brutal call on Oilers as makeup seconds later.
Fix the refereeing of these games.
I’m a Canucks fan. I was pissed on the missed trip on Demko, but no way in hell that was a trip right after.

Life without Jack Hughes and Nico Hischier hasn't been excruciatingly awful, but it ain't been grand, either.

Me: "Dynamite was awesome tonight. Can this night get even better??"
*Kings beat down the Golden Knights 4-1, and Kopi gets career goal #400*
Me: "Yes."

Life without Jack Hughes and Nico Hischier hasn't been excruciatingly awful, but it ain't been grand, either. I still hate how hockey teams can be allowed to be so vague about injuries so fans have no idea how long a player will be out. It's either an upper body or lower body injury. We have no idea when we can expect Nico or Jack back just that they're "week to week" whatever the f*** that's good for.
