Well, the folks who wanted a Washington Football Team type situation for the laughs are getting their wish for one season at least.

You mean to tell me these idiots can't take 5 minutes to have a brainstorming session and come up with a name? It's not rocket science. Hell, just do what the Tennessee Titans did and just call the team the Utah Coyotes until you can think of something better. SMFH

SMFH Cant call themselves the Coyotes as that nickname is still owned by the previous owner in case Phoenix gets the NHL back at some point

NBA Finals and Stanley Cup Finals are both boring as shit. Tough to go into the slow period of sports on two series that are total ass.

Both finals are probably going to end in sweeps or 5 game series and that sucks. And they've been pretty lousy games unless you're a fan of the winning teams.

As a bitter, jealous ass hater this series is feeding me. Throw all the rats on the ice at Rogers Place.

Oilers and Mavs must have heard all the complaining about these Finals because they've kicked some ass out there in these win or go home situations.

I don't really watch, just occasionally check in to see who's still in the Stanley Cup playoffs. I know it's not going to happen but I would love for the Oilers to win it. It's been too long since a Canadian team took home the cup.

Not meant negatively towards you at all, but it's hilarious for us Yanks to watch Canadians from the outside reacting to just about any Canadian team being in the final - you get a number of people saying "Man, you know what? It'd be great for the Cup to come home north of the 49th", but then you get die-hard Leafs/Habs/Flames/Canucks/Sens/Jets fans going "The Oilers? The OILERS?! No, no, no no no @#$% NO!", because deep down just about none of those fanbases want any of the others to finally do the honors and bring it home.

I do think it's funny that so many people would think Canadians would root for any Canadian team winning the Cup. That's like thinking Devils and Islanders fans in the NYC metro would root for the Rangers when it's like "f*** that we hate them." At most we'll be happy for the friends and family in our lives if they won. But if they shoved it in our faces we'd drink their tears when they get eliminated.

Not gonna lie, I'm about the casualest fan you'll find. Couldn't tell you the last time I watched a game. I semi pay attention during the playoffs because it's the playoffs. Ostensibly I cheer for the Ottawa Senators because they were the closest thing to a local team growing up and I didn't have any hard-core fans in the family to indoctrinate me into leafs or Habs followings. If the sens are out then I'll cheer for any Canadian team other than the leafs. If the leafs are the only Canadian team left, then I'll cheer for them. If there's no Canadian team then I will cheer for whoever hasn't won a cup. I find the more casual the fan, the more likely they are to cheer for any Canadian team. The hardcover you mention, probably not as much. Oh and I got no problem with the Oilers. I was a Gretzky fan as a kid.

I totally get why it would seem weird or funny or quaint, especially to those in big markets who have multiple teams close by. Shit, I'm probably as far from the Oilers as I am from the panthers. I'm not a rara patriot kinda guy either. But when it comes to hockey, I'll cheer for the Canadian team. Don't have a good reason for it. Come to that if the blue Jay's or the Raptors were in their respective playoffs I'd cheer for them too and I watch those sports even less than I do hockey.

At most we'll be happy for the friends and family in our lives if they won. But if they shoved it in our faces we'd drink their tears when they get eliminated. God, way to give me flashbacks to 1996; little sixth grader Mets fan me, who had already put up with all the schoolyard taunting since about second grade for wearing blue and orange, was all "Oh, the Yankees won the World Series, that's pretty cool for our area!" (probably helped my family was at least kind of happy to see Doc and Daryl doing well again, even if it was in the wrong uniform). Needless to say, those positive vibes were, uh, never reciprocated. But I totally get it from another experience: I was 9 when the Devils and Rangers had their legendary '94 conference final matchup, and given my family didn't care all that much about hockey I was really casual about who won, just thinking it was really cool that two teams from so nearby were so close to winning it all. Fast forward to this past month, with years and years of being a committed Devils fan now in my pocket: the Rangers lost to the Panthers and I rushed to dance atop their blue-tinged grave and consume their fans' tears of unfathomable sadness. Still, it's really interesting to consider how that all works in such a large space like Canada; country of 40 million people, seven teams, most of them spaced out far apart but with some obvious rivalries embedded (Leafs/Habs has the history, Sens being right between both means a geography issue, Edmonton/Calgary is obvious, etc), but with a whole lot of added layers that fans in the US usually won't pick up on without some exposure to Canadian TV and sports analysis/culture - like, say the Leafs finally broke their curse and were the team to bring the Cup back to Canada, you know tons of hardcore fans would be furious because there's the whole "ugh, why does HNiC focus SO MUCH on the Leafs even when they suck?!" vibe, and even fans way out in western Canada likely have relatives or know families nearby who are Leafs or Habs fans because for generations those were the only NHL teams in the country, so you end up with a rivalry on that front, too, and it's all about the sport that's clearly the biggest of all possible deals in that country...it's just tough for most of us down here to wrap our heads around, very unique.

Trust me, you have no idea what the desperation is like here. It sounds like a joke to everyone else but for a lot of us it's a matter of national pride. The ones going "no I hope they lose" are absolutely in the minority.

Oof, getting dramatic in here; pretty sure a road team in a Final has never gone down 0-3 and then forced a game 6 back in their own building. Like, I remember the Devils forcing a game 6 against the Kings in 2012, but they won game 5 at home to do it.
Hard to say what happens next; if the game had just continued with Edmonton dominating the way they did through the first half I'd be getting pretty confident that we're heading for 7, but the Panthers did finally answer back after basically taking the last period of game 3 through the first half of tonight off, so they may have finally woken up.
