Was nervous when I first read that: Markstrom is 35 and could potentially turn back into a pumpkin, and Bahl is one of the few PKers on the Devils' current blue line...plus, losing a first rounder always sucks, was thinking a 1st rounder could net someone better. HOWEVER: this is still a clear upgrade, so long as Markstrom stays healthy, and having Allen as his caddy should allow them to give Markstrom whatever time off he might need to ensure that. Even better: the 1st rounder is for 2025 and is top 10 protected, and the Devils clearly have designs on being a much better team than that in time for that draft. Even BETTER - Flames retain some salary, so Markstrom's cap hit for New Jersey is only $4.125 million. So not a perfect trade, but every team in the league knew the Devils were desperate for a goalie, and it'd be hard to get much else done this offseason until that was addressed. And, frankly, Fitzgerald was probably going to make moves this offseason that would've pushed Bahl down the depth chart, regardless, so why not bite the bullet. Get to keep this years #10 overall pick, get to keep Alex Holtz, etc., and now the Devils can turn their focus to beefing up their bottom six and maybe angle for a shutdown Dman to pair with their more offensive minded guys. |
