Why do people care so much about shiny Pokemon? Even when they were first introduced back in Gen 2 I never understood the appeal, especially when it comes to the types that barely look any different from the originals (looking at you, Slightly-Darker Blue Snorlax). It would make more sense to me if the shiny versions had better stats or could learn different moves or something to actually set them apart, but when I think of people spending hours or even days searching the same patch of grass, or reloading their games hundreds or thousands of times right before a legendary battle, or breeding hundreds or thousands of eggs, all in the hopes of getting a Pokemon that's green instead of brown, just baffles me.

Also shinies--maybe if I played competitvely I would care. But I just play single player and noone but me is gonna see it.

Online leaderboards. It's fun with friends to compare scores and times but I think 98% of the world leader boards I see are hacked scores that never get fixed.

Building/crafting mechanics in games that didn't need them. It's just super annoying and tedious.
As for shiny pokemon the reason the fanbase loves them is cause they're rare and it's like a status thing in the community to have a bunch of them.

I'd much rather just try to earn in-game money for certain shops, or complete a quest to get the weapon or armor I want myself, instead of having to do so many tedious battles to get rare materials just to make the equipment.

I used to get really annoyed at the mini-games in GTA:San Andreas and to a lesser extent, GTAIV and GTAV. I don't like racing RC cars or doing shit with helicopters in order to advance the story.

Yeah, you shouldn't HAVE to use the crafting mechanics to advance the story. One of my biggest pet peeves about Fallout 4, especially in the DLC. Far Harbor is a great, atmospheric DLC with a really fun story and cool visuals, and then, in the climax of the story, for some reason, I'm forced to play f***ing Minecraft to end it.

Similarly, features and items in the solo player mode that are only unlockable via doing something in the online mode. I'm currently replaying Assassin's Creed: Black Flag for the first time since 2014, and a handful of items are only unlockable via completing community events. Naturally, wanting to do a 100% run the first thing I ask is "How do I complete community events?" Ah. Since it would be too much to ask for integrating the unlockable events into the offline campaign, would it really be that hard to patch out any references to the items?

Crafting and open worlds are by far my least favorite things about games this past decade or so. Just two completely lame features that I wish hadn't invaded virtually every big title. Even games that feature them that I enjoy are enjoyable despite them, not because of it.

Keeping track of pointless stats...
Rockstar loves to do this to an absolute absurd level.Unfortunately, they also fail at it miserably.
Take for example Bully. They keep track of accuracy of all your items, but it's literally impossible to attain 100% because there are unskippable segments that require you to use the item, but don't reward the stat, only that you used it.
GTA San Andreas also counts cutscenes and certain mini-games like basketball or pool as a mission attempt.
In Vice City, other characters firing guns count as bullets fired and affect accuracy.
As someone who prides themselves on accuracy, I wish the company who makes a big deal about keeping track of accuracy, would they themselves be accurate.
And I haven't played it in years, but pretty sure GTA IV kept tracked of cutscenes skipped. Because God forbid I don't want to listen to the same dialogue I've heard before.

Well that and hologram trading cards, except the card is digital and doesn't actually exist.

I do love open world games myself when the game does it right and when the story suits the game world that its in but games like Final Fantasy,Sonic,Metal Gear and others like that just dont suit that kind of thing at all. I honeslty dont get the love for a lot of online features,i love my solo games far much more then the online stuff. I also dont get endless battle modes in fighting games where you have to keep fighting and grinding until you lose,i dont have the patience for it,the rewards are very little,it gets boring and most of all im crap at beat em ups so its no fun!

Cosmetics that can't be earned by ingame play, only by swiping the credit card.
I personally know a dude that champions this stuff because "it weeds out the fake fans from the real ones" whatever the #@$@ that actually means.

Ok but like, this isn't as weird an idea for Sonic as you make out, people have been asking for that for 20 odd years, to try and get the scale while keeping Sonic's sense of speed, as another approach rather than the linear levels. From Sonic Robo Blast to Sonic Utopia, fangames have been built on this model, and Sega finally gave it a go. (Though granted, I'd like more stylisation to keep the Sonic look, but hey, people think Adventure 2 was a high point to the franchise, and that abandoned Sonic style worlds almost entirely.)

Just seems a waste of time. Spending hours to get a virtual trophy for doing somethign inane like walking 5,000 miles in game or collecting all of the 200 hidden stars or whatever which will be displayed on your PS Profile which NOBODY is going to check.
Some people even buy games with easy platinum trophies just to get the trophy. That's insane to me.

I like unlocking trophies/achievements, it's cool to have a record of what you've done and it can be an incentive to replay games you otherwise might not. But yeah, there are people that take it seriously to unhinged levels. I also wish they were more creative more often. Stuff you unlock by accident just messing around rather than "Beat Chapter 2 of the Story". Online-only ones can suck it as well. ...Which brings me to my answer. Games with a heavy emphasis on online multi-player that will be unplayable when the server shuts down 3 years later. Especially when a series that's typically single player does it. Looking at you Dragon Quest IX. Just let people not have friends in peace.
