Trophy hunting Just seems a waste of time. Spending hours to get a virtual trophy for doing somethign inane like walking 5,000 miles in game or collecting all of the 200 hidden stars or whatever which will be displayed on your PS Profile which NOBODY is going to check. Some people even buy games with easy platinum trophies just to get the trophy. That's insane to me. Trophy Hunting nearly ruined gaming for me in the PS3/360 era. I got so competitive with my friends, and trophy hunting, that I wasn’t playing games to enjoy them anymore I was just focused on trophies. It completely burnt me out of gaming and took me a couple years to bounce back.

It is quite refreshing to play games on the Switch and not have to worry about trophies. I usually don't pay too much attention to achievements. I think I've only Platinumed about 3 games and each time, I'd managed to get about 90% of the achievements without looking at the list. I dread to think of the achievements a Zelda game would have.
Speaking of games like Zelda, does anyone actually like the mechanic of weapons breaking? If so, that's my most hated feature. I can give it a pass in games that try to be as real world as possible but Link can reverse time, travel through solid objects, and glue random things together, including to his sword. Why are his weapons breaking after a few hits? I don't care about the story reason for the weapons degrading because it annoys the shit out of me. At least games like The Witcher let you fix damaged weapons.

Games that rely on being "live service" for no other reason than to be long term money sinks to benefit the publishers. Avengers was the worst culprit of this.
Battle Royal games in general. Especially games where it makes no sense like the recent Vampire: the Masquerade Bloodhunt. Really didn't fit the setting at all.

It had a lot going for it early on. The opening stage where you are at the Avengers ceremony was great and really sucked me into the Marvel universe. Then it gradually went downhill from there. I do like Battle Royale games. The concept, as with everything that becomes popular, is overdone now with so many shit and unneeded ones sticking their nose in the trough. I get bored of them after a while though, but the concept is sound. I am kinda surprised no company has tried doing a single-player, storydriven one based on the Battle Royale novel or Hunger Games novel. Where you get a sort of choice of try and win the game by killing everyone, or find possible allies and escape.

I've personally never understood the appeal of perma-death in RPGs. Oh, so this character I've spent time with and grown an emotional attachment to is dead now? And all because I made one minor placing error on the battlefield? It's especially annoying, because a lot of the difficulty in these types of games stems entirely from unfair RNG and the enemy arbitrarily summoning more units that I couldn't have possibly been prepared for unless I already played this level.
Also, why does every AAA game need a selfie mode? Like, I get it. It's for social media, so you can show everyone all the stuff you're doing in the game. And in a game like Spider-Man, where it takes place in modern day New York and the main character is a freelance photographer, it makes sense. But in something like Kingdom Hearts 3 or Red Dead 2, it's so out of place and awkward.

Weapon degradation. Sometimes it can add immersion or give a desperate feel to combat and exploration. Most of the time it's just a giant pain in the ass.
Crafting systems. There's not a single game I can think that wouldn't be improved by removing the crafting system, save for obvious examples like Minecraft.
A silent protagonist. It's 2023 and there's simply no excuse for it, unless the protag is a legacy character like Link or the Doom Slayer.
Open worlds that are either artificially stuffed with collectibles and copy-and-pasted enemy camps, or are barren wastes of space that exist simply for the sake of existing. Hell, I'll just expand this to open worlds in general.
Padded game length. Not every game needs to be a 100+ hour epic. To paraphrase Dunkey, I'd much rather have a 25 hour game that's good all the way through, vs a 100 hour game that's padded out with meaningless bullshit.

In Doom(2016) the Doom Slayer wasn't really a silent protagonist. He never _said_ anything, sure, but he made his feelings quite clear on many occasions. He wasn't a blank slate, he definitely had opinions that he expressed through the medium of violence. It was a stroke of brilliance, to be honest... that they messed up in Doom Eternal. Like most of Doom Eternal. Battle passes. Every sodding game has one now, and they're just a grind. The only one I have currently is the MW2 one, and that's because I got gifted the special edition, and it comes with enough currency to get the battlepass for free. I don't use most of the stuff I unlock. I'll never use some of the stuff (skins for vehicles). And now they've got a battlepass, for the battlepass. No one has the time to grind more than one anyway. The only one I like is Deep Rock Galactic's, because theres no pressure. If you miss the cosmetics they go into the loot pool in the next season. And it's free.

Vast open worlds for games that don't really need them. Especially if there's a lack of fast travel options. I feel this way about Sonic Frontiers. Of all the franchises that needed a "gritty dour open world game" f***ing SONIC isn't one of them. I'm just going to say
Sonic Frontiers is one of the few open world games I've played where traveling from place to place DOESN'T feel like a chore thanks to Sonic's move set. Others being Spider-Man 2 and Saints Row 4.
