I just heard a classical CD that is devoted literally to one song, but with different covers and styles. Has this concept been done before in, like I said in the subject, popular, rock, etc?

It's an interesting idea. Closest I've seen is cover versions of an album, done by different artists. A few were released free with British music magazines like Mojo, Classic Rock, etc.. I know I've got the tribute to "Yellow Submarine", "Dark Side of the Moon", and I think a Fleetwood Mac album.
Edit: pretty sure Metal Hammer released one for "British Steel"...

Was it them or kerrang who did the Master of puppets one?
