I'm thinking mainly of entertainment, and for instance, A&E used to be more high culture type programming like operas and such. I think it's a safe bet that classical music is considered rather highbrow as well, but what out there today is?
Culture, sophistication etc. Does it even have as much of a place in the world these days with the world as it is?
Do you enjoy any of it?

I studied comparative literature, visit classical concerts when in my city and it's a composer I like, and generally like art. Besides literature I don't talk about it. Partly because of bad experiences.
I partake in Nanowrimo and the downright disdain for literature that's considered highbrow (mainly classics and those putting an emphasis on psychological experiences rather than plot) there is offputting. The culture isn't dead, but it's small, which is a shame because most people I know who like it aren't acting elitistic at all.

Every once in a while I'll stream classical music while I'm at work. Sometimes I find it eelaxing.

There’s lots that people consider lowbrow but very little that is considered highbrow…mainly because the upper crust is just as trashy as the people that they look down on. Often much more so.

Yeah there's multiple strands to that. One is things like Shakespeare and Opera were made for the masses anyway. Then the type who say they're into highbrow things are often unaccepting of anything new, eg TV stars on stage, any new musical, "dumbed down" classical concerts. Works are randomly deemed unauthentic, imperialistic or any other term they like to dismiss something. Any modern art is shit and/or derivative. A narrow selection of old accepted classics that haven't been sullied by the masses are all that's acceptable. Of course not everyone is like that and a few things remain, mostly if there's a barrier to entry and/or it's not in English. Maybe Jazz still counts because it doesn't tend to have as much mainstream crossover as classical.

I still maintain that a well timed and executed fart joke is at the pinnacle of comedy. Writers/comedians/people in general don't adhere to the "well timed and executed" part. Damn near 99% of encountered bathroom humor jokes are neither well timed nor well executed. But man... when one hits the right note at the right time? It's magical.

Along those lines, I was just reading an article about Mel Brooks and the person was stating the case that he’s one of the great American film auteurs. He just happened to make masterpieces that were really silly.

I have both Lil Jon and Igor Stravinsky in my playlist. I’m clearly confused about how this works.

One time a friend and I were watching the movie "Patient Zero." There's a part in the movie where someone is being hypnotized or something and someone else counts down from ten to one. As soon as they said ONE, I ripped a fart. If that isn't highbrow comedy, I don't know what is.
