Oh yeah, also, Joey Votto. Though, who knows, the Reds might turn that around this year, finally?

Barry Sanders, Dan Marino. Dominik Hasek in Buffalo (though he would later go on to win Cups in Detroit as a merely great, but no longer transcendent, goalie.) Juan Gonzalez averaged 37 HRs and 117 RBI per year while batting .296 in the 90's, winning 2 MVPs. The Rangers won a single playoff game in 3 appearances in the decade. Frank Thomas averaged almost as many HR and RBI and hit .319 with 2 MVPs as well. The White Sox won 2 playoff games in 1 playoff appearance. Modern day? Shohei and Trout obviously. Connor McDavid. Luka Doncic's supporting cast sucks every year and his best teammate Marbury'ed him to NY. 2 MVPS he shouldn't have won. The 96 AL MVP should have went to A-Rod or Griffey, and the 98 AL MVP should have went to Nomar, Jeter, or A-Rod. The 96 one was a massive shock when it was announced, since everybody had it pegged that A-Rod was rightfully winning it.

I don't think you understand the nuance of the eyeball test of baseball writers. It's a lot like Johnson and Johnson's baby powder. No one knows what goes into it, but it is unquestionable perfection.

Two old school football choices here. Matt Le Tissier at Southampton and Paulo Di Canio at West Ham.

Nolan Ryan. Look at his numbers. Now imagine if he had good teams behind him.

Yeah, but I think the Mets trading of Ryan is overrated as an all time blunder. It looked like it made sense at the time.

Andrew Luck should have had a Hall of Fame career. He had it all, he could throw, he could read the defense, he could thread the needle.
But The Colts flat out refused to get him an O-line to protect him, that he decided it wasn't worth getting paralyzed.

Mike Trout and Shohei Ohtani. End of discussion.

I'll give a shoutout to Mitch Richmond. One of the great scoring guards of the 90s, part of the dynamic Run T-M-C, and an excellent 3-point shooter on the level of a Reggie Miller. Yet didn't sniff postseason play due to the doldrums of Northern California basketball, and then the late 90s Washington Bul-zards, who sucked out loud. He did get a ring with the '02 Lakers, but he was a benchwarmer elder statesman at that point.

Corey Dillon during his time in the Bengals. Great runner, but the team during that time period was known as "The Bungles" for a reason. Hell, there's probably a lot of names that could be here (and I'm someone who's been "Ride or Die" with Cincy since birth.)

*glances at 2004 Cubs*
we got Sammy Sosa, Moises Alou, Nomar Garciaparra, Mark Grudzielanek, Aramis Ramírez, Derrek Lee...the pitching rotation of Mark Prior, Kerry Wood, Carlos Zambrano, Greg Maddux and Glendon Rusch. Had LaTroy Hawkins to close out the games....
oh, that team finished 3rd, and were completely out of anything by September....I hate baseball...

Anyone on the Arizona Coyotes. You're not only on a bad team, you're barely even on a team.

Another from Australian Football
A guy still playing is Nathan “Nat” Fyfe.. One of the best AFL players from the last two decade… a two time Brownlow winner. But it looks like his entire career playing career will be spent at the constant disappointment that is the Fremantle Dockers. OK there was brief spell in the Ross Lyon stint in the mid 2010’s where the team were a top 4 side.. Making the their only Grand Final in 2013, finishing the season on top of the ladder in 2015.. But other then those the team has been constantly mediocre. Nat Fyfe is in my opinion the best player to ever play for the Dockers.. And I think he ranks up there with Ablett Jnr, Judd, and Franklin as one the best AFL players of the new century

I would count Steven Gerrard. Sure he won the Champions League with Liverpool in 2005 & also some cups but for most of his time at the club we were miles from winning a league title.
He is the best English player to never win the league in the EPL era. Yes, that includes Harry Kane.

Another one from Australia, this time from the NRL competition, Ben Hunt. Spends the early half of his career at the heavyweight Brisbane Broncos team, regularly making the playoffs. As it turns out, they make the championship game in 2015, and but for an absolutely hail mary play by the opposing North Queensland Cowboys that officially finishes after the end of regulation time, they would've won it. They go to extra time after the Cowboys goal attempt (from the sideline, not from in front like in the NFL) rebounds off the post and stays out. Hunt himself drops the kick-off at the restart, turning over possession, and the Cowboys win the championship off of a field goal. Heartbreaking stuff. Anyway, two seasons after this, Hunt goes to the St. George-Illawarra Dragons, where he still is now, and other than his first season there in 2018, they have missed the playoffs every season since, and would arguably be worse off than they are if not for Hunt basically carrying the team single-handedly most weeks. Meanwhile, the Broncos, while they had a team-worst form slump around the same time, are as of 2023 right back up the top, pretty much locked in for the playoffs and strong contenders for the overall championship. Fortunately, Hunt does get to prove his talent in good teams up to three times a year, as he's a regular in Queensland's State Of Origin team (not quite an all-star game, per se, but is highly regarded, even more so than international level), and has been a part of many of Queensland's winning teams over his career.

But The Colts flat out refused to get him an O-line to protect him, that he decided it wasn't worth getting paralyzed. Well….it’s not so much that they refused to get him an O-line to protect him as the idiot putting the teams together (Grigson) insisted on splash signings elsewhere (that usually did not pan out) and drafting mid round picks on linemen. Unfortunately, despite being a former NFL lineman himself, Grigson had little talent in picking linemen. The two times he did use early picks on linemen, one could never stay healthy (Jack Mewhort) and the other (Ryan Kelly) was drafted when Grigson was clearly on his way out (I do suspect he was ultimately fired for the combination of driving Pat McAfee (a longtime favorite of Irsay’s) to retire, antagonizing Chuck Pagano (one of the nicest guys in football), and for alienating Luck).

Why do I get the feeling 5 years from now we will be adding Justin Herbert into this convo?
Anyway my homer take is that Tony Gonzalez would be a lock for greatest TE of all time if he was on a good Chiefs team that could win a playoff game.
