I tend not to really have expectations on what an act will look like, but one thing that will always throw me off is when a group's lead is the only dude all gimmicked up, and everyone else is like just wearing a black t-shirt and jeans (or something similar).

When I was in elementary & early middle school a lot of the kids who listened to metal would wear Grateful Dead shirts because they had skulls on them. So I just assumed from the imagery and the name that the band was pretty heavy.

Imagine Dragons looks like Jack Reacher and a bunch of hobbits decided to form a band.

I opened this thread fully expecting Ghost to be one of the first bands named and wasn't disappointed.

Rancid.
I remember hearing that name when I was getting into Punk and was expecting something between Black Flag and GG Allin and the first song that I heard was ska Punk. LMAO.

So I just assumed from the imagery and the name that the band was pretty heavy. See, where I lived we had a lot of motorcycle enthusiasts and since some of them had the Grateful Dead lightning skull on their bikes, so I thought that the Dead was "biker" music.

Pretty much any time Fozzy play when Jericho is in full Painmaker regalia.

On a similar note, rather than looks. "Died In Your Arms Tonight" by a band called Cutting Crew sounds like it'd be the most emo thing ever.

Two of the most iconic soul voices of all time (The Righteous Brothers) belonged to two skinny white guys.

They pretty much look like their first two LPs sounded, but yeah, their image didn't match their more mature sound. Now they've got older and dropped the "punk" look I think they pretty much look like they sound.
This may be because I'm listening to them now, but Cock Sparrer had this in reverse: they were an oi! band where some of the members actually had long hair at one time. Again, now they're older they look like how you'd expect a band like that to look.

(language warning)
The moment at the :45 mark damn near gave me whiplash the first time I saw it. M. Night Shyamalan only wishes he could write twists like that.

And then there's Bobby Caldwell, who sounds like Teddy Pendergrass but looks like Kenny Loggins.

Not exactly the same thing, but finding out that Alice Cooper is a born again Christian threw me for a loop.
Im a Christian myself so no judgement, but not something you'd expect from the Grandaddy of shock rock.

Also just want to point out, that Ghost looking like that, then having a Pop Metal sound is amazing. Even better when you realize how dark some of the lyrics are on top of it.

Listen to this Edan song and then look up what he looks like: Love me some Edan, I always though he had an old school, Big Daddy Kane-ish delivery.

Black Sabbath, Also White! I remember a story from Ozzy talking about how they got booked for a show and a bunch of Black people showed up and got mad because they thought they were getting something else.

And then there's Bobby Caldwell, who sounds like Teddy Pendergrass but looks like Kenny Loggins. Rest in Peace, Bobby Caldwell. I'll always love how every few months or so, somebody in one of the music groups on Facebook will suddenly discover that fact. A lot of "blue eyed soul" acts could probably go in here. For example, if you asked me to describe Rag'N'Bone Man after listening to Human, in a million years, I would've never said "extra large Channing Tatum".

One of the deepest, bassiest, soulful voices out today belongs to this little dude. (King Krule)
