And it’s really caused me to hate people more than bartending did. Nonstop younger first time buyers coming in and trying to finance $40,000 + with small down payment. You can literally do the math online before hand…and can even get the VIN off our site and estimate you insurance before coming in. Instead they do it on the spot and get shocked and awed they have to pay $400+ a month in insurance.
Don’t even get me started on the dude that came in today and was being a little bitch because we don’t allow the type of vehicle he was looking at to be test driven unless we agree on numbers first. Dude literally wanted a discount for no test drive. Sorry buddy…no test drives on the VROOM VROOM’s.

Back in the 80’s I worked in a car dealership for two weeks. I actually got credit for selling two cars. On the Monday of the third week, I woke up and realized I just could not bear to go back. I called and quit and they didn’t seem to care.
We were supposed to get the customer into a car for a test drive but 90% of the cars on the lot had dead batteries or no gas. So we had to convince them to test drive a car that we knew they didn’t want. Once we got them back in the showroom, we would triple team them with salesman, sales manager, and finance manager and throw all sorts of numbers at them until the customer glazed over. Most would just get pissed off and walk out. The two people I saw actually sign ended up paying WAY more than they wanted to. The whole thing felt so unethical that it made me physically ill by the end of the day.

I was amused that in our training we are taught NOT to lie and that “buyers are liars”…which they are…but then we’re trained to do anything possible to make a deal.

If you’ve done sales before it’s always fun having sales people try to sell to me. It’s like their mind tricks won’t work, but if they do a good job I appreciate it and have no issue giving them my business. Now if they’re bad, the fun begins. Most of the time they think with their wallet and I will make them pay for that and waste their time.
With cars, I know what I’m willing to pay for a car when I walk in, so it just comes down to getting to that price and getting it taken care of.
Btw Tesla’s approach to selling cars is super easy. Here’s the price, take it or leave it since it’s all done online. Can’t haggle with the computer. I think more companies will go with this in time.

I just think some people have super unrealistic views of what they’re gonna pay. They also are smoking some fine crack if they truly think I’m making the commission they ask me I’m making. Sure dude….you’re offering $50 over MSRP out the door…yeah totally making $2000 commission on that deal. We had an older couple today demand $11,000 less because a car company hadn’t released the new model they want yet so it’s our fault. Another wanted me to beat a deal he wouldn’t prove he really had…which was like $30,000 off. Sure thing buddy.
