Kerry von Erich/Warrior Urban Legend?

There was always that Rumor back in the 90s that the Warrior we saw at WM 8 and after was not the same Person like before, because the Real Warrior died in 1991 from a heart attack.

I also heard in older Posts that People thought it was Kerry von Erich. Only thing that i never understood about this Kerry died in 93. Who would have played the Warrior later in 96 and in his WCW Run then?

The Kerry rumor makes even less sense when you consider Kerry was suspended in the lead-up to WrestleMania 8 due to his drug-related arrest. And even if there needed to be a faux Warrior for Mania, they sure as hell weren’t going to rely on Kerry at that point of his life for such a pivotal main event role.

I have been trying to figure out how this rumor became so widespread in the pre-internet days. Everyone heard this rumor back in the day so how did it spread!?

I remember being like 5 years old and my older brothers friend asked me if Texas Tornado and Ultimate Warrior were the same person and I was so confused.

They don't even look alike. Yeah, they had long hair, but that really was where it ended.

I think it is probably something Vince embraced to be honest. Supposedly that is how Vince came up with the name. He didn’t like “Dingo Warrior” which had been his name in Texas and when he first came to WWF. He was working it through with Prichard what the name should be. “He is more than the Road Warriors. More than the Modern Day Warrior. He’s the Ultimate Warrior.” And it stuck from there.

I get that part, but it’s a huge wink and a nod to other territories they almost never, ever did.

When the Warrior came back at WM8 he was a bit slimmer than he had been. He was still jacked to hell, but not quite as muscular as before and I think that led to it.

Plus, it's just a common rumor that wrestlers get replaced. The same rumor was repurposed for the Undertaker, Kane, and several others. It's pretty popular outside of wrestling as well with fake Paul McCartneys etc.

If anything that makes more sense as fans probably noticed he'd been gone, and this was WWF brining him back as the new UW.

Warrior returns, looks different than he used to, so people decide it makes more sense that he's actually being played by a guy who looks absolutely nothing like Warrior. Funny how people make things up.

So having first read this almost 20 years ago on here...

The rumor was that Warrior was unable to make the show and that Kerry filled the role at Wrestlemania VIII. Nothing beyond that, just that Warrior was injured or sick or something and that Kerry filled the role that night.

It never was Warrior was replaced by Kerry as much as it was, "Kerry filled in for the Warrior" and the basis was how different he looked that night.

Pretty sure the rumor was made up around the time it initially happened which was an era where really until 2005 you didn't have a whole lot of access to old footage unless you owned either the Coliseum Video release, the 1998 WWF Home Video release or the original broadcast recorded and so it was easier to make up stuff like this then which probably had some sort of weird basis to start and push as fact.

30 years later after the original rumor and 20 years after old footage became easier to access with the 2005 DVD release of the Wrestlemania Anthology, its now morphed into some weird rumor that Kerry replaced the Warrior in 1992, which is far from the truth and the original rumor.
